Turning Places into People
AFS sends over 10,000 young people each year to experience life in a different country. Fulfilling our mission requires innovation, flexibility and commitment on the part of staff and volunteers in more than 50 countries around the world. In the wake of the economic crises that began in Asia, where major players in the private sector failed, AFS remained strong because of our extensive human network. When civil unrest sparked in Indonesia and Hurricane Mitch ravaged Central America, the AFS Network acted quickly and responsibly to ensure the continuity of the program and the safety of our participants.

In 1998 an increasing number of AFS participants went to a more diverse range of destinations. AFS organizations in Europe, such as Italy and Austria, significantly increased the number of participants sent to countries in Latin America, Asia and Africa. In the same year AFS also saw a rise in the number of exchanges between countries such as Brazil and Slovakia, Chile and Malaysia.
