Due to the huge variety of dishes in the Japanese cuisine, many restaurants are specialized in a single kind of dish:

  • SOBA-YA:
    Specialized in Udon and Soba.

  • RAMEN-YA:
    Specialized in Ramen.

  • SUSHI-YA:
    Specialized in Sushi. Sushi-ya most often have a sushi bar behind which the sushi chefs prepare the dishes. Some cheaper sushi-ya have a small conveyor belt installed into the sushi bar table from which the customers can choose the dish they like. The bill is evaluated by counting the dishes that have piled up beside the customer.

  • OKONOMIYAKI-YA:
    Specialized in Okonomiyaki. In some restaurants, you can prepare the Okonomiyaki by yourself on the table in which a cooking plate is installed.

  • TEMPURA-YA:
    Specialized in Tempura dishes.

  • SUKIYAKI AND SHABU SHABU RESTAURANT:
    Specialized in Sukiyaki and Shabu Shabu. It is prepared at your table.

  • YAKITORI-YA:
    Specialized in Yakitori. These restaurants are very popular among salarymen for drinking together after work.

  • ODEN STREET STALLS:
    A very interesting type of restaurant: Oden is prepared and served in tents that are built temporarily on the streets during the colder months of the year. The tents are heated, and the atmosphere inside is very nice.

  • CURRY SHOP:
    Specialized in curry rice. Many curry rice restaurants are like fast food restaurants.

  • TEPPANYAKI:
    Restaurant where the cooks prepare meat dishes right in front of the customers in a very artistic and fast way.

Other types of restaurants offer several different kinds of dishes:

  • TRADITIONAL RESTAURANTS:
    Ryotei are very expensive, and as a normal tourist you won't even be able to get into some of them; but there are also cheaper, more casual, traditional restaurants.

  • SHOKUDO:
    Cheap restaurants where one can eat a various kinds of Japanese dishes.

  • IZAKAYA:
    Japanese style bar where one can eat some small dishes of food.

Furthermore, the Japanese like to "eat multiculturally":

  • CHUKA RYORI-YA:
    Chinese dishes are served in these restaurants.

  • KOREAN BBQ RESTAURANTS:
    Made on your table.

  • WESTERN STYLE RESTAURANTS:
    Especially French and Italian cuisine.

  • ETHNIC FOOD RESTAURANTS:
    Food from Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and other South-East Asian countries.

  • FAMILY RESTAURANTS:
    Offer any kind of food: Japanese, Western, Chinese, sweets, etc.

  • AMERICAN STYLE FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS:
    McDonalds, MOS Burger, etc.

  • KISSATEN:
    Western style cafe where you can drink coffee, tea, or soft drinks and eat sweets.
