The Japanese cuisine offers a great variety of dishes. Most dishes, however, contain rice and/or seafood, the two basic kinds of food of the Japanese.

Japanese main dishes:

  • RICE:
    The basic food of the Japanese since over 2000 years. Rice can be eaten for breakfast, lunch, and supper and exists in countless different forms. Please, read more on the special Rice Page.

  • SASHIMI:
    Raw fish. Many kinds of fish can be eaten raw. Please, read more on the special Sashimi Page.

  • SUSHI:
    The most famous and most popular Japanese food. Please, read more on the special Sushi Page.

  • NOODLES:

  • TEMPURA:
    Seafood, vegetables, and other things deep fried in Tempura batter. Please, read more on the special Tempura Page (recipe).

  • YAKITORI:
    Small pieces of grilled chicken on sticks. Please, read more on the special Yakitori Page (recipe).

  • OKONOMIYAKI:
    A mixture between pizza and pancake. Please, read more on the special Okonomiyaki Page (recipe).

  • DONBURI:
    A bowl of rice with something on the top: e.g. tempura (Tendon), egg and chicken (Oyakodon), tonkatsu (Katsudon), beef (Gyudon), eel (Unadon), ...

  • GYOZA:

  • SUKIYAKI:
    Beef, tofu, and vegetables cooked in a pot and then dipped in raw egg.

  • SHABU SHABU:
    Japanese meat fondue.

  • NIKUJAGA:

  • KOROKKE:
    Has its origin in the European croquette. Please, read more on the special Korokke Page (recipe).

  • TONKATSU:
    Deep fried pork cutlets.

  • CURRY RICE:
    Japanese style curry rice.

  • TOFU:

  • NATTO:
    Slimy, fermented soya beans with a strong smell. Read more on the special Soya Page.

  • NABE:
    Nabe means hot pot. It looks like a Chinese wok. Many different nabe meals can be prepared in this pan right on the table.

  • ODEN:
    One kind of a nabe dish. Fish cakes, eggs, and vegetables are cooked for several hours in a soup. It is a very popular warming food in the winter.

    Pickles. They are served in small dishes almost for any meal as a side dish.
