The Amazon Adventure ran from 23 July to 17 Sept 1997

Objectives

The Amazon Adventure is being created as a resource for students in New Zealand schools – and for their teachers and parents. This project is to let students follow me on my travels along the Amazon river system in Brazil and Peru, and to learn about the people that I meet along the way.

My aims are that students involved in this project will:

  • learn about other cultures, and about how other people live;
  • understand the importance of protecting our environment, so that our world remains a pleasant and interesting place to live;
  • practice important skills such as reading and comprehension,
  • practice other learning skills, by encouraging students to ask questions and seek out their own answers about how things work or why things are the way they are. Students should also get practice about how to find information from a range of sources such as our project website and materials, CD-ROM packages (such and Microsoft Encarta), and from the school or town library;
  • practice their expression of ideas and concerns, and telling of simple stories.

A related goal of mine for this project is to demonstrate the potential of the Internet for developing high quality educational applications, in and effort to help New Zealand educators gain greater experience and to assist further development.

Project materials, such as this website, will contain background information about Amaz⌠nia and its peoples, as well as suggestions for activities that students can do to participate and enhance their learning.

This project is aimed at students in New Zealand primary and intermediate schools (ie. students aged 5 to 15 years).
