  5.     Didn't have much submissions and time to get last minute reviews for
  6. the mag so this is about it.  Hopefully we'll get more submissions in
  7. the future.  Thanks to everyone who contributed and to The Master [TL]

  24.                 ∙ MOViE ReViEW for SUMMER 1994 ∙

  26.    Well,  I'm the one who's gonna tell you about the movie scene.  I don't
  27. see all the movies that are out, but I see more than most. So, I'll tell      
  28. you about what I do see.  Here's how I'll score 'em:                          
  29.                                                                               
  30. *** = Worth it at any price.  Excellent movie.                                
  31. **  = For people with less to do or like to see a lot of movies. Okay.        
  32. *   = See this one only if you're in a hospital with brain damage. Sucks.     
  33.                                                                               
  34.    Most of the time I'll choose two stars.  Since I go to the movies a        
  35. lot,  I enjoy many movies that are not really that great.  If you're the      
  36. same, it's OK to see a two star, if you're not, don't waste your time.        
  37. That's generally how I rate them.                                             
  38.                                                                               
  39.    For August, there were many choices. The top flicks were True Lies,        
  40. Forrest Gump, and The Mask, among others.  True Lies is exciting at the       
  41. start and finish,  although it lacks something in the middle.  It's too       
  42. slow other than the latter,  and so  it definitely loses something 'Speed'    
  43. didn't.  The fast parts were good,  albeit  unrealistic,  and kept you        
  44. on the edge of your seat.  The parts in between were just fluff, and          
  45. seriously detracted from this film.

  47. True Lies (R) - **                                                            
  48. Although exciting, in light of 'Speed' it just can't measure up.              
  49. Being better than many films out now, you might consider seeing it.           
  50.                                                                               
  51.    The next flick I'll review is Forrest Gump.  This unconventional,          
  52. sometimes strange movie is actually quite good.  The acting by Tom            
  53. Hanks is exceptional, and he portrays  a somewhat  "mentally challenged"      
  54. person quite naturally,  I must say  :)   At any rate, this is a good         
  55. film, taking us through history and its social  organizations quite           
  56. well.  I would  recommend it to anyone.  Could possibly even be a good        
  57. date movie.                                                                   
  58.                                                                               
  59. Forrest Gump (PG-13) - ***                                                    
  60. Well done, with good acting, good story, and even action.                     
  61. Although a bit lengthy, it's worth it. It never really slows down.            
  62.                                                                               
  63.    'Clear and Present Danger' is the next topic. I thought this movie         
  64. was outstanding. Plenty of action, political intrigue, all the good           
  65. stuff. It is sort of long,  but never  is there a slow moment.  Jack          
  66. Ryan, the same CIA good guy from 'Patriot Games' is here,  played by          
  67. Harrison Ford.  James Earl Jones, his previous boss, dies,  and so            
  68. Jack  is left the big  man's job.  However, there are many within             
  69. the  CIA and the White House  who don't approve of Jack's 'boy                
  70. scout'  attitude,  and this makes for some  interesting internal              
  71. struggles as well. I have not yet read the book, so I can't tell you          
  72. how it compares to the film.                                                  
  73.                                                                               
  74. Clear and Present Danger (PG-13) - ***                                        
  75. Excellent combination of action and dialogue, a must-see for almost           
  76. anyone. Definitely worth it at any price...well, almost :)                    
  77.                                                                               
  78.     Now,  on the lighter  side of things,  I'll talk about 'The Mask.'        
  79. It was just as I suspected,  crazy and unbelievable.  I loved it. Jim         
  80. Carrey does the best job any  actor could do playing a cartoon                
  81. character.  The special effects were amazing, bringing the cartoon            
  82. world into our own.  There is  no real need to follow the plot; the           
  83. gags practically make the movie.  It was light, funny, and entertaining.      
  84. Who could ask for anything more?                                              
  85.                                                                               
  86. The Mask (PG-13) - ***                                                        
  87. If you hate comedies on the cartoonish side, I can't recommend this film.     
  88. However, if you enjoy this type of film, it's great. Go and see it.           
  89.                                                                               
  90.     Ok..  now for  'It Could  Happen to You.'  I know what  you might         
  91. say.. it looks corny and stupid, but it works. A nice, fluffy movie where     
  92. a cop gives a waitress a lottery ticket for a tip and says he'll give         
  93. her half the winnings if their  numbers come up.  Of course they win, and     
  94. with the  cop being such a nice guy, he sticks with his promise. I won't      
  95. give anything else away.                                                      
  96.                                                                               
  97. It Could Happen to You (PG) - **                                              
  98. I can't exactly call it a must-see, but if you have a date in mind, try       
  99. it.  Not the greatest, but not objectionable.
