  9.  AB    Evaluation of new antifungal agents may be assisted by measurement of
  10.        Histoplasma antigen clearance. We compared antigen clearance in patients
  11.        treated successfully with itraconazole to that in historical controls
  12.        treated with amphotericin B. Patients receiving itra were participants
  13.        in an AIDS Clinical Trials Group protocol. The historical control group
  14.        included AIDS patients treated with ampho B from 1988 to 1992. Antigen
  15.        clearance was measured by radioimmunoassay, testing samples at baseline
  16.        and at the end of induction treatment in a single assay to allow direct
  17.        comparison. Antigenuria cleared more rapidly in patients treated with
  18.        ampho B than with itra. TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. Antigenemia
  19.        clearance was similar in both groups. This rate of clearance of antigen
  20.        correlates with clinical evidence of more rapid response to treatment
  21.        with ampho B than itra, namely defervescence. Clearance of antigen may
  22.        complement clinical and cultural markers for evaluation of antifungal
  23.        therapy for histoplasmosis.
