  10.  AB    Western blot (WB) assays are considered the gold standard for confirming
  11.        retroviral screening test results. Specimens obtained with the OraSure
  12.        oral specimen collection device have been extensively tested for the
  13.        detection of antibodies to HIV and other viral infections. An HIV-1 WB
  14.        was developed for the confirmation of the immunostatus of OraSure
  15.        specimens. To evaluate the performance of this WB, paired serum and oral
  16.        samples collected from 226 seropositive and 204 seronegative subjects
  17.        were tested. The serum specimens were tested using an FDA-licensed HIV-1
  18.        WB kit; the matching OraSure specimens were tested using the OraSure WB
  19.        assay. Among the 226 confirmed seropositive samples, the OraSure HIV-1
  20.        WB was positive for 224 samples and indeterminate for the remaining two.
  21.        No false negative samples were observed. None of the 204 specimens
  22.        identified as HIV-1 non-reactive by EIA testing was found to be positive
  23.        by either the OraSure HIV-1 WB or the licensed serum WB.
