  23. The following is a list of currently active USENET newsgroups as of
  24. 1 Aug 1994.  This list does not include the gatewayed Internet 
  25. newsgroups (see below).  The groups distributed worldwide are divided
  26. into seven broad classifications: "news", "soc", "talk", "misc",
  27. "sci", "comp" and "rec".  Each of these classifications is organized
  28. into groups and subgroups according to topic.
  29.  
  30. "comp"  Topics of interest to both computer professionals and
  31.     hobbyists, including topics in computer science, software
  32.     source, and information on hardware and software systems.
  33.  
  34. "sci"   Discussions marked by special and usually practical knowledge,
  35.     relating to research in or application of the established
  36.     sciences.
  37.  
  38. "misc"  Groups addressing themes not easily classified under any of the
  39.     other headings or which incorporate themes from multiple
  40.     categories.
  41.  
  42. "soc"   Groups primarily addressing social issues and socializing.
  43.  
  44. "talk"  Groups largely debate-oriented and tending to feature long
  45.     discussions without resolution and without appreciable amounts
  46.     of generally useful information.
  47.  
  48. "news"  Groups concerned with the news network and software themselves.
  49.  
  50. "rec"   Groups oriented towards the arts, hobbies and recreational
  51.     activities.
  52.  
  53. These "world" newsgroups are (usually) circulated around the entire
  54. USENET -- this implies world-wide distribution.  Not all groups
  55. actually enjoy such wide distribution, however.  Some sites take only
  56. a selected subset of the more "technical" groups, and controversial
  57. "noise" groups are often not carried by many sites (these groups are
  58. often under the "talk" and "soc" classifications).  Many sites do not
  59. carry some or all of the comp.binaries groups.
  60.  
  61. There are groups in other subcategories, but they are local: to
  62. institutions, to geographic regions, etc. and they are not listed
  63. here.  Note that these distribution categories can be used to restrict
  64. the propagation of news articles.  Currently, distributions include:
  65.     world           worldwide distribution (default)
  66.     can             limited (mostly) to Canada
  67.     eunet           limited (mostly) to European sites in EUNet
  68.     na              limited (mostly) to North America
  69.     usa             limited (mostly) to the United States
  70. There may be other regional and local distribution categories available
  71. at your site.  Most US states have distribution categories named after
  72. the two letter abbreviation for that state or category (e.g., "ga" for
  73. Georgia, "nj" for New Jersey). Please use an appropriate distribution
  74. category if your article is not likely to be of interest to USENET
  75. readers worldwide.
