-=| Supplements During Pregnancy? |=-
-------------------------------
Taking supplements is now a controversial issue. Many people still believe
that more is better - that taking megadoses of nutrients will make them even
healthier. But some vitamins and minerals are *lethal* in high doses.
Pregnant women should be aware that such high doses are passed along to the
fetus and can cause damage.
Supplements do not give you the health benefits of eating real foods: Fiber,
micronutrients and even fats are missing from supplements. No doubt, other
health benefits of eating real food have yet to be discovered.
If nutritional demands cannot be met because of diet or metabolism, the health
of the baby and the mother can be improved by *specific* supplementation,
particularly in the cases of iron and folic acid. Precise recommendations
should be made by physicians and registered dietitians on an individual basis.
