Please accept my apologies for all of the duplicate messages that went out to the list. I have been
in the process of moving all of our mail over to a new mail hub. It seems that I did it just in time.
Our old mail link seems to have been the cause of the duplicates. Now that the executor list is on
the new system, performance of the list should improve. Also, Cliff and I are talking about make
digests of the list available on one of the emulator newsgroups. Hopefully this will happen in the
not-to-distant future.

Subject: First experimental version of Executor/DOS available to 1.2 owners
Sender: Executor-Owner@NACM.COM
Precedence: bulk
Hi Folks,
I've now generated the first experimental version of Executor/DOS and
put it in the directory ftp.cs.unm.edu:pub/ardi/Executor_DOS. You'll
want to pick up the README and ".zip" files in there if you want to
see this first experimental release.
There's not a whole lot of new features in the new release, although
it does support CD-ROMs and a "-nodrivecheck" switch (which prevents
the floppy drives and hard disks from being examined every time you
punch the "drive" button).
In general, many more apps now run than did before, although
Lemmings, which used to run, no longer does, and the StuffIt
programs, which were working in the lab, *aren't* working in this
particular snapshot. I'd recommend this snapshot only to adventurous
people, or to people who have been having filesystem problems.
In addition to fixing the Lemmings and StuffIt related bugs, we'll
also start keeping a more formal log that will show what the various
new experimental releases do.
If you don't have the commercial version of Executor/DOS 1.2, then
you will not be able to use this new version; instead of putting a
fully functional copy of Executor in the .zip file, we put in a set
of patches that convert the fully enabled 1.2 version into a fully
enabled 1.2a version.
Please let me know if you are able to use this update. In the past,
this newsgroup has been used primarily by our NEXTSTEP customers, so
I really have no idea how many of our DOS customers already know
about this list. I'll make an effort to alert more DOS users to this
list when the next experimental version comes out.

Hi Folks,
Today ARDI is moving from Suite 101 to Suite 4101. In theory there
should be no disruption of service, but if you have trouble reaching

ready, after all.

Subject: [DOS] Bug Fix for 1.2a + Tip + grabbing stuff via ftp
Sender: Executor-Owner@NACM.COM
Precedence: bulk
Hi Folks,
If you've picked up 1.2a, you'll notice that Lemmings no longer runs.
The problem is with the new version of the DOS extender that we're
using (that's the file "executor.exe"). After you've installed 1.2a,
remove /executor/executor.exe and then move /executor/go32.bak to
/executor/executor.exe.
In addition to finding this incompatibility, I also found out why the
StuffIt utilities were working under Executor/NEXTSTEP, but not
Executor/DOS. The problem has been fixed and Executor/DOS 1.2b
should run the StuffIt utilities. I hope to have 1.2b out tomorrow,
but if I can't get it out then, it will have to wait until Tuesday.
Here's the tip: if you're out grabbing stuff from ftp sites and
bulletin boards and running it under Executor (*much* more stuff runs
under 1.2a than under stock 1.2) and you get cryptic error messages,
try running with "Pretend Sound" enabled. An example of a program
that will not run unless you have "Pretend Sound" enabled is PGA Tour
Golf (it also will need the old version of the DOS extender). You
t.hqx (you don't need to use BINARY mode because it's an "hqx" file).
If you've never used wuarchive before, it's easy to do, except you
may need to try connecting a half dozen times before you get through.
Since the files are in ".hqx" format, you can just bring them over to
your DOS filesystem and then run Compact Pro (if it's a .cpt.hqx file
-- you'll need UnStuffIt for .sit.hqx, but UnStuffIt won't work until
Executor 1.2b is out), then use HFS_XFer to copy the .hqx file into
one of your .hfv drives, then use the "Convert FROM BinHex 4" from
the "Misc" directory, then use the "Open ..." item from the "File"
menu to open up the "cpt" file that the conversion leaves for you,
then "Select All" and "Extract".
Those directions may sound difficult, but once you've done it a few
times, you'll see that you can bring over a bunch of files and un-hqx
them and uncompact pro (and unstuff, soon) them fairly easy. You may
want to check the various 00index files to see which applications
require color before you bring them over. We won't have rudimentary
color support that you can play with for a few more weeks now.
If you have questions, be sure to send them to "questions@ardi.com".
Vaune Fischer will respond; These days I'm spending almost all of my
time working on 1.2, rather than answering e-mail.

executor 1.2 for DOS seems to be MUCH slower now. Could it be the
more memory is the problem or is the cuprit something else ??

Hi. This is my first posting. PLEASE let me know if there is a FAQ for
this mailing list.
I cannot seem to make new volumes that WORK with executor 1.2 for DOS.
I use the prog mkvol ( or something like that ) and it makes a new
file with the dos name I wrote, but executor does not show it when I
pick volumes :(
thanx in advance

Subject: exexp12b.zip on ftp.cs.unm.edu + general status report
Sender: Executor-Owner@nacm.com
Precedence: bulk
Hi Folks,
The updater that will convert a commercial version of E/D 1.2 to E/D
1.2a, the second experimental release of Executor/DOS, is available
as ftp.cs.unm.edu:pub/ardi/Executor_DOS/exexp12b.zip. This new
version *does* allow the StuffIt programs to work and has a few more
filesystem fixes in it. There are also a variety of misc. fixes, so
more applications should work than before.
The first investment installment from NTK, our Korean investors,
arrived earlier this week, and not coincidentally, Bill Goldman has
returned to work at ARDI after a two year hiatus. Bill will be
handling NEXTSTEP tech. support and also supervising our in-house
testing. It's now even me important than ever to send e-mail to
"questions@ardi.com" instead of "ctm@ardi.com", since I'm trying to
get Vaune and Bill to handle as much customer interaction as
possible. That will allow me to spend this month getting the final
features integrated into 2.0.
Mat and Cotton are working furiously on color support, but I'd guess
it won't show up until Executor/DOS 1.2d (i.e. two weeks away), and
even then it will be a little rough.
Rick Buchanan has significantly spruced up our Executor/DOS manual,
and soon we'll be updating it to include all the 2.0 features.
We are also talking to some serious graphic artists about our
packaging for 2.0 -- everything's coming together fairly nicely.
