  2.                  ON DISK MONTHLY USER GUIDE

  4. GETTING STARTED
  5. * Hard Disk System - Boot MS-DOS from the hard disk. Insert
  6.   On Disk Monthly in Drive A, then type "A:" and press Enter
  7.   (return). Finally, type "GO" and press Enter (return).
  8. * Two Floppy Drive Systems only - Boot MS-DOS on Drive A,
  9.   insert On Disk Monthly disk #1 in Drive A:, and put
  10.   disk #2 in drive B:. Finally, type "GO" and press Enter
  11.   (return).
  12. * One Drive System only - Boot MS-DOS, then remove your
  13.   MS-DOS disk and insert On Disk Monthly. Type "GO" and
  14.   press ENTER (return).

  16. IMPROVING THE DISPLAY ON SOME MONITORS
  17.   On Disk Monthly senses the display adapter installed in
  18. your computer and adjusts its display accordingly. The On
  19. Disk Monthly menu system utilizes graphics. For this reason,
  20. the CGA menu displays in high resolution two-color (black and
  21. one other color) graphics mode. CGA users may press the
  22. space bar to change the "background" color while running the
  23. menu.

  25. On some monitors, such as MCGA and LCD displays, the
  26. display may not be acceptable. If this applies to you, use
  27. the following start command(s) instead of "GO" to force a
  28. different mode:
  29.  
  30. * For some LCD or monochrome monitors, type "GO /M"
  31.  
  32. * For some CGA and MCGA monitors, type "GO /C" Note for MCGA
  33.   customers: On Disk Monthly is displayed in EGA mode.
  34.   Since MCGA cards cannot support this resolution, MCGA
  35.   users will view On Disk Monthly in CGA mode.
  36.  
  37. * For some EGA monitors, type "Go /E"
  38.  
  39. TURNING OFF MARKETPLACE ADS
  40.   You may elect to turn off the Marketplace ads (you'll see
  41. one every time you exit a program) by typing "GO /NOAD" when
  42. you boot each issue of ON DISK MONTHLY.
  43.  
  44. MOVING AROUND ON THE MAIN SCREEN
  45.   You may select and run programs or other items with the
  46. keyboard or mouse. Both will "behave" like they do in our
  47. other programs and in most commercial software. Use your
  48. mouse, tab or arrow keys to select Program Icons,
  49. Departments, Copy/Info or Help--all on the left side of the
  50. screen. Double click on a Program Icon (or press Enter while
  51. it is selected) to run a program. Use the up/down arrow keys
  52. or mouse to select an item in the Departments or Copy/Info
  53. pick list. A program or other item is selected when the text
  54. is highlighted. A pointer also appears when a program is
  55. selected.

  57. COPYING ON DISK MONTHLY
  58.   To copy individual programs or the complete issue, select
  59. the menu's Copy/Info button, set the drive and path, choose,
  60. a file or the entire issue, then press Enter to copy or Esc
  61. to exit back to the menu (cancel). Use arrow keys or mouse
  62. to move to and set the following options:
  63. * SET DESTINATION DRIVE - Allows user to choose the drive
  64. that files or the entire issue will be copied to. Use arrow
  65. keys or mouse to select drive (red when selected).  If you
  66. are running on a floppy system you may not copy to the
  67. drive you are running from.
  68. * SET DESTINATION PATH - Gives a default path (a new one
  69. that will be created when Enter is pressed), but may be
  70. changed by the user while selected (cursor will appear).
  71. * FILES - Lists each program separately and entire issue as
  72. copy choices. When chosen, a highlight will appear in the
  73. list of files. Arrow up/down to or click on a selection to
  74. be copied. Use horizontal arrow or mouse to exit FILES list.
  75. * INFORMATION - Shows program/file sizes and the number of
  76. files per program as user scrolls through FILES list.

  78. MAIN SCREEN OPTIONS
  79. A. Programs - Each program is visually represented by a
  80.    small icon on the left side of the main screen. When an
  81.    icon is selected (with the mouse, tab or arrow keys), a
  82.    description of the program and its features will appear on the
  83.    right side of the main screen. Click on the icon a second
  84.    time or press Enter while it is selected, to run the
  85.    program. Mouse users may double-click on an unselected
  86.    icon to run a program.

  88. B. Departments - The list of Departments will appear on
  89.    the right side of the main screen when you select the
  90.    Departments button on the bottom left side of the main
  91.    screen. Use the mouse or up/down arrow keys and Enter to
  92.    access the Departments listed there.

  94. C. Copy/Info - A list of Copy/Info choices will appear on
  95.    the right side of the main screen when you select the
  96.    Copy/Info button on the bottom left side of the main
  97.    screen. Use the mouse or up/down arrow keys and Enter to
  98.    choose any of the choices listed there.

  100. D. F1: Help - A brief Help file will appear when you select
  101.    the Help button on the bottom left side of the main
  102.    screen with the mouse or keyboard equivalent (F1). This
  103.    file contains more extensive menu system help. Our
  104.    programs contain their own help files--files that are
  105.    typically printable (using a button, F-key command or
  106.    your computer's Print Screen capabilities).
