Thousand Miler is based on "Mille
Bournes," the French card game.
The object of the game is to reach
exactly 1000 miles before your opponent.
You can play against either the computer
or another person.
Game description: The screen consists
of two playing fields and a card display
area. The top field is for player 1.
The bottom field is for player 2, or for
the computer in a one-player game. The
card display area is between the two
fields. The cards in each hand are
displayed there during alternate turns.
Each field graphically displays the
condition of the hazards.
23
Game play: The computer deals six
cards to each player. The first player
receives an extra card. All seven cards
are displayed. (New cards always appear
in position 7.) Player 1 must either
play or discard one card. (In a two-
player game, player 1 must view the
cards while the other player looks
away.)
To start the game and begin
accumulating mileage, a player must play
a roll card or a "Right of Way" safety.
(Both players start with a red light.)
Without a roll card or "Right of Way",
the player must either discard or play a
hazard on the opponent.
23
When player 1 has completed a turn,
player 2 plays or discards and draws.
Play continues until one player reaches
exactly 1000 miles.
Cards: There are 106 cards in the game
deck, consisting of mileage, hazards,
remedies, and safeties.
Mileage cards:
10 each - 25, 50, and 75 mile cards.
12 - 100 mile cards.
4 - 200 mile cards.
These cards are the only means of
accumulating mileage. Mileage can be
played on any turn when you are not
stopped by a hazard.
23
Hazard cards:
3 each - out of gas, flat tire,
and accident cards.
5 stop cards.
If one of the hazard cards is played,
travel cannot resume until a remedy card
has been played. Hazards cannot be
played if the other player is already
stopped or has the corresponding safety.
4 - speed limit cards.
A speed limit will slow down travel.
When a speed limit card is in effect,
the maximum mileage card playable is 75
mph. An end of limit card cancels speed
limit.
23
Remedy cards:
6 each - gas, spare tire, repairs,
and end of limit.
14 - roll cards.
Remedy cards can be played any time, in
turn, and remove your current hazard.
Safety cards:
1 each - Right of Way, Driving Ace,
Extra Tank, and Puncture-proof.
A safety prevents an opponent from
playing a specific hazard.
Safety cards are played automatically
when dealt or drawn. A hazard will be
canceled if the corresponding safety is
in effect. An inverse bar on the screen
shows which safeties have been dealt and
to whom.
22
Shuffling: Prior to the start of the
game the deck is shuffled. After all
cards have been used, only the discards
will be re-shuffled.
