Legends of Murder is a fantasy/role-playing/murder mystery game,
and you are its main character, the Inspector. In Volume 1 (published
on Big Blue Disk Issue #38), you were called to Stonedale Castle to
investigate the murder of the King.
Now in Volume 2 you have been summoned to the small town of Grey
Haven which contains a school of wizardry. There are a number of
apprentices and one master wizard. One of the apprentices was
murdered two days prior to the start of the game, and it is up to the
Inspector to solve the murder. The longer you play, the more clues
you will find to determine who the murderer is.
^1PURPOSE
Your ultimate purpose in Legends of Murder is to discover the
murderer of the apprentice. There are numerous riddles and puzzles to
solve along the way, as well as many people to meet and places to
explore. It is very important that you talk to everyone you meet,
search all rooms that you enter, and make note of what you learn for
later reference.
^1HOW TO PLAY
The following key commands are available to let you move around the
map and play the game:
Arrow Keys - Move North, South, East, or West.
Arrow Keys
plus
Right Shift - Move continuously.
<Z> - Display status of the Inspector's abilities.
<U> - Use an item such as a healing potion. Once an item is
used, it disappears from your storage area.
<E> - Equip the Inspector with a weapon such as a whip or a
sword. When the Inspector has to FIGHT, success depends
on the power of the weapon used. For example, a whip is
more powerful than a pair of hands.
<L> - Lose an item. Your storage area is limited to holding
nine items. If you find a really neat item but have no
room for it, then you'll have to decide which lesser
item to discard.
<S> - Search the area where you are standing.
You'll be using this CONSTANTLY.
Remember, leave no stone unturned!
<C> - Cast a spell. Spells are learned from special books
that you might be lucky enough to find during your
investigation.
<D> - Turn the display of DESCRIPTIVE messages ON or OFF.
When this is OFF you'll only get the important messages,
like "Bad, Bad Leroy Troll is coming to get you!"
When this is ON you'll get the important messages AND
you'll get descriptive messages that explain what your
surroundings look like.
<G> - Save or Restore Game. You'll want to use this frequently!
When you save the game, all your possessions and
abilities are saved. If you get killed, you are allowed
to restore the game to one of your previously stored
states.
^1SAVING A STATE OF THE GAME
You are allowed to save up to five situations (or states).
Use the up and down arrows to choose a number from 1 to 5
and press ENTER. Then enter the description for this
state. For example, you might enter
1) just inside the apprentice houses
We recommend saving right before you are going to take
on a particularly dangerous challenge. Then if you die,
you can restore to where you were before the fatal
challenge.
^1RESTORING A STATE OF THE GAME
If you die, you are given the option to Quit or Restore.
If you choose to restore, then the list of five states
is presented. Use the up and down arrows to choose one
of the states. Press ENTER and you will be restored to
the place on the map and at the level of power stored in
the chosen state.
NOTE: If you haven't done any SAVES, then all five of these
options will be blank because there is no saved state to
restore to. In this case, you should quit the game and
start again.
You don't have to wait until you die to restore. At any
time during the game press G and choose the restore option.
^1CLEARING ALL SAVED STATES
If you want to clear out all the information you have saved,
use the CLRSAV.EXE program. From the DOS prompt, enter the
command CLRSAV, and all the game information you saved will
be deleted.
<F1> - Display HELP on how to play the game.
<ESC> - Quit the game and return to DOS.
^1THE INSPECTOR
The Inspector has a number of personal attributes which affect the
play of the game. These attributes are:
Fighter Level - Combat ability. The higher the level, the greater
the Inspector's fighting ability.
Experience - How long the Inspector has been investigating and how
many challenges have been survived.
Hit Points - Amount of physical damage the Inspector can
withstand. The red bar below the map window shows the
Hit Points. When this value gets low, the Inspector
can take healing potions (if any are available) to
increase the value. The Inspector can also heal
naturally over time by avoiding any additional
fights. If this value goes to zero, then the
Inspector is toast.
Max Hit Points - Maximum amount of healing that can be done.
Initially, this is limited to nine. So, you can take
all the healing potions you can find, but your Hit
Points will never exceed nine. As your experience
increases, your Maximum Hit Points will also
increase. For example, with greater experience you
can have 20 hit points or more.
Condition - Any afflictions disabling the Inspector.
Strength - The physical condition of the Inspector.
Dexterity - The degree of the Inspector's eye-hand coordination.
Agility - The Inspector's speed and dodging ability.
Intellect - The Inspector's intelligence, will power, and ability
to resist mind-altering influences.
Concentration - The Inspector's ability to concentrate and remember a
previously-memorized spell. The blue bar below the
map window shows Concentration. Each spell requires a
certain amount of concentration. If a spell requires
greater concentration than the Inspector has, then
the spell will fail. Concentration can be raised
magically, or it can be raised naturally by the
having the Inspector walk around and clear his
thoughts.
Weapon - The weapon currently in the Inspector's hand.
Armour - The armor currently worn by the Inspector.
^1TIPS
- Save your game frequently. If you are killed, you can restore
to your last save. You don't always have to start over from the
minimum state.
- It is important to search everything. Many objects contain clues
to the murder and to other puzzles in the game.
- Visit every location. There are specific things you must do in
certain locations in order to complete the game.
- Try to explore all corners since some things, like stairs, do not
show up on the map.
- Make notes of important information along the way.
- When looting a chest, you need not always take everything. If you
leave items, you can always come back later and get them.
- Some events will not take place until you have possession of the
correct items. For example, certain rooms may not be entered until
specific items have been found.
- Certain characters will comment on various items the Inspector may
find, so, once you find an item, go to someone who might have an
interest in it.
^1ADDITIONAL HINTS
If you are truly stuck and cannot figure out what to do next, you
may want to look at the file of hints that we've prepared. There is a
file called ^1GRHINT.TXT^0 on the disk. You cannot access it through
the Big Blue Disk main menu. Instead you must use an editor (like the
Blue Line Editor) or a listing program (like Speed View) to see the
contents of this file. The hints provided should set you back on the
trail of the killer!
