The Shreveport Captains got their first look at the freshly christened
10,000-seat Cohen Stadium Tuesday night. So what, new site, same old story.
The Captains continued their meek effort against West Division teams falling
6-4 to the Diablos. Shreveport is now 8-16 against clubs from the West this
season and is 3-13 on the road in tumbleweed country. Not even a rain delay
of 72 minutes could halt the Caps' latest execution. The Diablos wasted no
time in establishing themselves as the dominant team. Four runs after two
were out in the opening inning put Shreveport behind the 8-ball immediately.
A pair of two-RBI doubles by Sandy Guerrero and Shon Ashley off starter Steve
Lienhard, 2-4, set the tone.
El Paso added two more unearned runs on two Captains errors in the
third to make it 6-1. Then Shreveport made a mild move. Newcomer Jim
McNamara, playing his first game for the Captains after being sent down from
Phoenix, collected three hits and drive in all four Captains' runs. He had an
RBI single in the third and seventh and drove home two in the ninth with a
towering drive that nearly carried the fence. But El Paso reliever Chris
George earned his ninth save of the year by getting Rafael Santana to ground
out to end the game. El Paso starter Tim Fortungo making his first Class AA
appearance, pitched seven innings for the win. Besides McNamara's three hits,
Juan Guerrero, who also had three errors, had three hits to combine for six of
the nine Shreveport hits.
Former Captain Dee Dixon, the Texas League leader in steals, went
0-for-4 in the game for El Paso and was thrown out trying to steal. Former
Louisiana Tech player Charlie Montoyo had a hit and pitcher Dean Freeland, who
was scheduled to start, had back problems and missed his turn. The teams meet
again tonight at 8:15 as Shreveport's Mike Remlinger, 7-7, meets Tim Watkins,
1-0. * In a roster move, Shreveport's top reliever Steve Reed has been put on
the disabled list and will be replaced by left-hander Eric Gunderson, who will
join the team from Phoenix today. Gunderson started the year with the San
Francisco Giants.
