  9. Note: all information files are now in the form AAREADME.DOC.  The old 
  10. file names are being retained for a transition period but now contain 
  11. only pointers to the AAREADME.DOC files. 
  12.  
  13. This main directory contains copies of version 0.3b of the NASA/OSSA
  14. Office of Standards and Technology (NOST) Draft Standard for
  15. Implementation of the Flexible Image Transport System (FITS). This
  16. version is the result of the Technical Panel review of the comments
  17. received on version 0.2 of the standard during the period
  18. June-September 1991.  The most significant changes are elimination of
  19. the restriction on alphabetic characters to upper case in table field
  20. names (value of TTYPEn keywords) and replacement of the informational
  21. appendix describing the AIPS A3DTABLE construct with text describing
  22. the BINTABLE binary tables proposal. Given the nature of the comments
  23. received, the Panel concluded that only minor revisions, if any, to
  24. version 0.3 would be necessary before it could be submitted to the
  25. NOST Accreditation Panel for approval as a NASA Standard and to the
  26. IAU FITS Working Group for endorsement as the Standard for FITS.  No
  27. general community comment period is envisioned, although comments or
  28. questions can be sent to the address at the end of this file.

  30. Version 0.3b is being reviewed by the Technical Panel to ensure that that it
  31. properly incorporates the Panel decisions.  When that review is complete, a
  32. revised version will be announced and released, if necessary; any differences
  33. from version 0.3b are likely to be small.  The new version is being made
  34. generally available now to allow those individuals or groups who may have been
  35. using earlier drafts as a reference on FITS, in spite of their provisional
  36. status, to replace their copies of the earlier draft with the improved one. 
  37. As before, the form of the Standard is not final and should not be considered
  38. to supersede the existing FITS documentation. 
  39.  
  40. This directory also contains a list of the extension type names that 
  41. have been registered with the IAU FITS Working Group.  The file 
  42. containing the list includes a brief summary of the extension type 
  43. corresponding to each name, the developer, and the status of the 
  44. extension.  Also described is the procedure for registration of 
  45. extension type names.  This file will be updated from time to time as 
  46. new extension type names are proposed and extensions corresponding 
  47. to reserved names progress through the process required for IAU FITS 
  48. Working Group approval as a standard extension.  As a result, it 
  49. should be used rather than the appendix in the Standard covering 
  50. reserved extension type names, because the XTENSION.LIS file will be 
  51. more up to date.

  53. The BASICS_INFO.TXT file is an adaption of material revised and 
  54. periodically posted to the Usenet sci.astro.fits newsgroup, normally 
  55. the third week of the month.  It contains a brief description of FITS, 
  56. a list of FITS references, and information on where other material on 
  57. FITS is available, including an answer to the frequently asked 
  58. question of how to convert FITS to one of the pure image formats.
  59.  
  60. The text of one proposal for a new extension type, the IMAGE proposal
  61. of Ponz, Thompson, and Munoz appears in the directory.  Readers should
  62. be aware that this extension type is at present only in the *proposal*
  63. stage and is subject to revision as a result of community review,
  64. until a final form has been approved by the IAU FITS Working Group. In
  65. the meantime, anyone using the specific type name IMAGE must make sure
  66. that their files remain in conformance with the current rules.  Keep
  67. up to date on developments through the USEnet newsgroup sci.astro.fits
  68. or the fitsbits mailing list (to subscribe, send mail to
  69. fitsbits-request@nrao.edu).

  71. There are two subdirectories

  73. The SOFTWARE subdirectory contains software and information about
  74. publicly available software.  It is described further in the
  75. AAREADME.DOC file it contains. 
  76.  
  77. The ERRTEST subdirectory contains a number of sample FITS primary
  78. HDUs with a variety of deliberately inserted header errors, for use in
  79. testing FITS readers. Further information is in the AAREADME.DOC file
  80. of the ERRTEST subdirectory.
