Also known as Mass Screening exercise, the Sook Ching in Japanese means "to cleanse through purging". It was a series of devastating screening exercises that resulted in the butchering of thousands of innocent Chinese in Singapore. It was supposedly planned by Masanobu Tsuji, aide to Yamashita. Chinese Singaporean residents were interned at selected areas known as screening centres and their fate depended on the very arbitrary standards of the Japanese soldiers and Japanese informers who conducted the screening.
