Capital of Nagasaki prefecture, Kyushu, Japan. Nagasaki's port was the first to receive (16th century) Western trade, and remains one of Japan's leading ports. Shipbuilding is the chief industry. During World War II, Nagasaki was the target of the second atomic bomb ever detonated (Aug. 9, 1945) on a populated area.
