  1. British admiral; great-grandson of Queen VICTORIA. In WORLD WAR II he directed commando raids in Europe and commanded Allied operations in Burma (now Myanmar) from 1943. As viceroy of India (1947) Mountbatten concluded the negotiations for the independence of India and Pakistan. He was (1959-65) chief of the British defence staff. In 1979 he was killed when a bomb planted by Irish Republican Army members exploded aboard his fishing boat off the Irish coast.
