A prominent Hokkien businessman who had studied in Raffles Institution and Hong Kong University. He was nearly banned by the British for anti-Japanese activities. During the Japanese invasion he formed a committee for civil defence. Together with the Malayan Communist Party, it controlled about 70 labour unions.
He escaped just before the British surrender, but many of his family were captured by the Kempeitai and disappeared. He himself went on to India to recruit men for the Malayan underground. In 1943 he was captured by the Japanese when he went to Perak with Force 136 guerrillas. He died in Batu Gajah jail on 29 June 1944 after torture. He was 34.
On 13 January 1946 a memorial service was held for him on the steps of the Municipal Building (City Hall). The British brought Lim's remains to Singapore and reburied them with full military honours at MacRitchie Reservoir. He was posthumously awarded the rank of Major-General by the Chinese Nationalist Government.
