THE DISC TECHNICAL HELP GUIDE
══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
* To fix most problems associated with the video drivers, delete
a small file from the root directory of C: drive titled "UNIVBE.DRV"
This can be done by typing the following:
c: <enter>
cd \ <enter>
attrib -r univbe.drv
del univbe.drv
Now, you can try running The Disc defaulting to your videocards'
VESA modes or a VESA driver specific to your videocard by typing the
following from the root directory of The Disc.
thedisc -vesaoff
══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
Q. Why does my computer hang with a black screen when I type THEDISC?
A. We use a third party program to handle the large number of non
VESA supporting video cards on the market. This program titled
UniVBE from SciTech Software fails to run on some machines and
therefore sometimes hangs.
To avoid calling this program start The Disc by typing the
following:
THEDISC -VESAOFF <enter>
If The Disc still fails to run, you will need to obtain and run
a VESA driver suited to your videocard, then retry the above
program.
*** OR ***
Delete the UNIVBE.DRV file as mentioned above & type the following
from the root directory of The Disc.
uvconfig -pc:\ <enter>
attrib +r c:\univbe.drv <enter>
thedisc <enter>
══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
Q. Where can I find a VESA driver specific to my videocard?
A. You can try the shareware version of UniVBE that is on this CD,
in the UNIVBE directory.
══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
Q. My computer hangs when detecting the soundcard or when I first
run THEDISC it says please run "THEVOICE". What does that mean?
A. Run the program called: THEVOICE
from the root directory of The Disc. It is a soundcard setup program.
══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
Q. When starting The Disc, a message appears saying:
"FAILED to load VESA driver!". What does this mean?
A. Check that you have at least 12 Kilobytes (12288 bytes) free on
your C-Drive.
or/
Your video card may not have 640x480x256 capabilities.
* To check the kind of video card you have, try the UVCONFIG.EXE
program in the root directory of the CD.
══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
Q. Why is the screen broken up and the background images flicker?
A. Your video card may have less than 1 Megabyte of memory on it.
* To check the kind of video card you have, try the UVCONFIG.EXE
program in the root directory of the CD.
══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
Q. Why do the movie sequences seem to run slowly or erratically?
A.
You are running The Disc in a DOS shell from Windows.
or/
Your processor may be a low-speed 386.
or/
Try removing any unnecessary TSR programs from memory.
or/
Check that the TURBO button is in the correct position.
══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
Q. In The Disc, why can't I move the cursor with my mouse?
A. Check your mouse is plugged in.
or/
Check that you have a mouse driver installed.
* The keyboard can emulate the mouse by using the cursor keys,
and SPACEBAR or <ENTER> for the mouse-button.
══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
Q. Why is the sound volume quiet?
A. Check the volume of your soundcard.
This could either be a dial at the back of the computer or a
program supplied with your soundcard.
══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
Q. Why did The Disc hang when I ran it from Windows, OS/2 or Windows 95?
A. The Disc has been designed to run in normal DOS mode at this
stage and we have done our best at getting it compatible with
these other operating systems, but at the cost of a performance
sacrifice.
So if it consistently locks up your machine, try and boot your
computer up in DOS mode instead, before running The Disc.
══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
Q. I get an "Insufficient Memory" error, what do I do?
A. It is likely that you have the Windows smart drive installed
and/or EMS set up with your EMM386 driver, which is consuming
too much of your available memory.
Remove the \windows\smartdrv line from your autoexec.bat file
and change the numeric value for your EMM386 driver to NOEMS.
