  9.          So, you want to make your parents proud; show them
  10. that you want to be an electrical engineer! Well, here are
  11. a few tricks that will thrill mom & dad!

  13.          CAPACITORS
  14.          ----------

  16.          These little buggers can do more damage than most
  17. objects their size. Let's start with the basics.
  18. Electrolytics: These are the little capacitors (usually blue
  19. or black in color) with the + symbols going down the side. The
  20. ones you find inside transistor radios usually are quite harm-
  21. less. But, you can find caps of mammoth proportions inside
  22. computer power supplies or your brothers expensive stero amp.
  23. Ok, what do you do with it?
  24.  
  25.     Electrolitics have one drawback; they don't like reverse
  26. polarity, and will breakdown when reverse biased. A small cap
  27. may just fizzle, smoke a little and die. But if you take a
  28. large cap, (100,000 uF and up) you can create a nice explosion.
  29. Don't do this at close range. Very large caps can be lethal
  30. when they go. Try connecting 120V across them and watch those
  31. suckers go. By the way, if you don't like somebody, charge them
  32. up PROPERLY and toss the charged cap at some unsuspecting
  33. person. They will get a shock they won't soon forget!
  34. Caps that you find inside large machines  i.e. A/C units will
  35. also detonate, but they have to be short circuited. This is only
  36. for the very brave and very stupid!

  38.       THERMISTORS

  41. These are also found inside power supplies, and those transient
  42. voltage outlet strips you get at any computer store. Thermistiors
  43. when subjected to very large voltage spikes, tend to explode and
  44. shatter, so be sure you stay far away if you hook up a bunch in
  45. parallel.

  47.      Many people have tried to build shock type wands with
  48. automobile coils..... while this does produce a high voltage,
  49. it's a cumbersome way to do it. A better idea would be to
  50. use the flyback transformer one finds in the back of any TV set.
  51. These are much easier to operate, consume less power, and give
  52. you more shock for your dollar.
