Welcome to the Walnut Creek CDROM Desktop Library.
The disc is set up like a large hard disk, with the books in individual
subdirectories. The books are in plain text (ascii) in the \books
subdirectory. All the texts are in the public domain and are
redistributable. There are no licensing restrictions.
A file viewer for dos machines is in \dos. The viewer is called 'list'.
Please use your own viewer, or copy this one to a directory on your path.
(To see the directories on your path, type 'path' at the dos prompt.)
Windows 3.1 users can use the notepad to view short documents, and windows
write to view larger works.
Amiga users can use the viewer in the 'Amiga' subdirectory, 'MuchMore'.
The plain text files are in subdirectories in the \books directory.
To choose a work to read, first look through the index file 00_index.txt in
the root directory.
An example entry of this file is:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
books\aeschyls\agamemnn
-----------------------
Agamemnon
By Aeschylus
Translated By E.D.A. Morshead
450 BC
The works of the author 'aeschylus' are in the 'aeschyls' directory. The
specific work 'agamemnon' is called 'agamemnn' in that directory.
There is also an index of works for each author in the individual author's
directory. This file is also called 00_index.txt.
The BBS subdirectory contains programs and index files for different BBS
software including rbbs, pcboard, and the opus family. People who are
not running a bbs need not concern themselves with this. The BBS directory
has its own readme.
The DIRS file has a list of the directories on the disc.
The WIN subdirectory has a few windows 3.1 text manipulation tools. These
files are shareware and require payment to their respective authors if you
use them. These tools are not supported and provided only for your
convenience.
