  32.                PROJECT - "TUNNEL RAT"

  39.     The following are a few documents (translated
  40. into English) that have become known to BC some time
  41. ago - made public for the first time. Shortened
  42. version:
  43.  
  44.     In 1978, Soviet High Command fearing the coming
  45. of World War III, decided to experiment with methods
  46. of taking control over enemy Silos (that is where
  47. most of the Western Tactical Missiles are), and new
  48. ways of leading guerilla war in the cities (usually
  49. large ones: Paris, Berlin, London, New York, etc.).

  51.     A use of the Fast Response Team was authorized
  52. for the duration of the project (Fast Response Teams
  53. are usually Spetsnaz and Intelligence units,
  54. separated under clause "Actium Alpha". Their job is
  55. to take control over enemy nuclear and tactical
  56. installations in case of and during War.).
  57.  
  58.     A group of scientists was assigned, as the
  59. experiment was fairly new and data on long-term
  60. underground survival was scarce. The team consisting
  61. of about 15 people (the actual number is unknown due
  62. to the highest secrecy, and to the fact that
  63. probably a few soldiers died).
  64.  
  65.     The team lived constantly underground in the
  66. substantial catacombs under old Moscow, military-
  67. grade tunnels leading from different strategic parts
  68. of Moscow to Missile Defense Grid, Silos for
  69. Tactical Nuclear Missiles, and military Fall-out
  70. defense perimeter). The depth the Team was under
  71. never went lower than 200 meters and higher than 10
  72. meters.

  74.     During the course of the project it was
  75. discovered that life underground is problematic.
  76. That people need sun (for its "life-giving" rays),
  77. also fresh air (which isn't really all that fresh,
  78. but for some reason our brains don't like the
  79. underground atmosphere in the slightest). About 2
  80. weeks later the first serious problems of light
  81. headaches developed, which grew worse with every
  82. passing day.

  84.     New problems appeared, and in the end the whole
  85. thing was taken off-line for medical reasons. BUT
  86. VERY TOP SECRET or VERY UNOFFICIAL Reports
  87. (whichever you think are more truthful) said that
  88. most of the team went mad and try to shoot their way
  89. out to surface against a company of motorized
  90. infantry. BTW did I mention that some of those
  91. tunnels are big enough so that two medium tanks can
  92. drive side by side with great ease.

  94.     Actually some of those tunnels are protected by
  95. Motorized Infantry Detachments with Tanks and
  96. Armored Vehicles.

  151.               Executive Summary
  152.

  154.     Project "Tunnel Rat" - established June 11th,
  155. 1978.
  156.  
  157.     The project involved Active Response Team 487
  158. (Spetsnaz) of the Moscow Defense District (Central).
  159.  
  160.     The aim of the project - to learn hands-on
  161. experience of underground and tunnel warfare, with
  162. possible future applications against foreign
  163. countries. Such applications shall include sewer use
  164. (for guerilla warfare), as well as occupation and
  165. neutralization of enemy Nuclear, Biological, Toxic
  166. and/or Conventional Missiles (with emphasis on work
  167. in underground Silos).
  168.  
  169.     Underground sewers, catacombs, communication and
  170. heat, as well as military defense tunnels were used.
  171.  
  172.     The project lasted 2 (two) months, during which
  173. no one of Team 487 left the underground structures.
  174.  
  175.     15 days in the course of the project, the first
  176. symptoms began to take place (Team 487 reported of
  177. occasional headaches and earaches).
  178.  
  179.     32 days into the project, Team 487 reported
  180. constant headaches, inner-ear disorientations, light
  181. sensory hallucinations and whiteness of skin.
  182.  
  183.     61 days after the beginning of the project, Team
  184. 487 was withdrawn from underground tunnels and
  185. placed in a high security ward of the Spetsnaz Field
  186. Hospital. Diagnosis includes: high blood toxicity,
  187. severe whiteness of skin, severe headaches, severe
  188. hallucinatory problems, partial inability of
  189. mechanic actions, discoloration of eyes and severe
  190. depression.

  192.     Team 487 completely recovered within 27 days.
  193.  
  194.     Partial success has been reported by Team 487,
  195. in that all combat simulations have been completed.
  196. The longest term of survival underground at peak
  197. ability has been set to 22 days.

  199. Recommend:  1. Further testing in the underground
  200.                simulations.

  202.                against "underground sickness."
