  8.         he watched her sleep. she looked so quiet,
  9.         so peaceful. he examined her throat,
  10.         watching the soft pulse of blood just
  11.         beneath her skin. her skin was pale, and
  12.         a thin sheet of sweat slicked her skin.
  13.         he held his hand over her mouth, just
  14.         a few centimeters from her lips. he
  15.         sighed with relief when her warm breath
  16.         reached his palm.

  18.         she was going to live.
  19.  
  20.         he stared apprehensively at the empty
  21.         bottle on the floor. he loved his sister
  22.         dearly, but he did not know how much more
  23.         of this he could take. he looked away from
  24.         the bottle and watched the breeze push the
  25.         curtains away from the window. he closed
  26.         his eyes tightly and wondered what else
  27.         she had done.
  28.  
  29.         might as well find out.
  30.  
  31.         he had noticed earlier that blood had
  32.         seeped through her white sheets. the phone
  33.         that she had used to call him with was
  34.         beneath them, the cord snaking
  35.         menacingly from the wall jack. he took
  36.         a deep breath and lifted the sheet.

  38.         his throat closed.
  39.  
  40.         both of her arms had been sliced
  41.         beyond recognition. there was more gash
  42.         than skin visible, and a small pool of
  43.         blood had collected beneath each arm.
  44.         the razor had been cast aside. she was so
  45.         beautiful.. how could she destroy
  46.         herself this way?
  47.  
  48.         damn her.
  49.  
  50.         he rose from the bed and retrieved the
  51.         first aid kit from the bathroom. he
  52.         gently bandaged her wounds and checked
  53.         her pulse. it looked like everything was
  54.         going to be ok. he put fresh sheets over
  55.         her and sat in the chair next to her bed.
  56.  
  57.         her journal was on the table next to him.
  58.  
  59.         guiltily he took the journal from the
  60.         table and began to read. perhaps he
  61.         could help her if he knew what she was
  62.         thinking. suddenly he was absorbed in
  63.         the details of his sister's life. he
  64.         read about everything that had ever
  65.         happened to her. he knew her innermost
  66.         thoughts, and they made him feel dirty.
  67.  
  68.         hours passed.
  69.  
  70.         he wandered the house aimlessly as dawn
  71.         broke. he never knew. he had no idea what
  72.         had happened to his sister, and he never
  73.         protected her. it was his fault. he would
  74.         never forgive himself. no wonder she
  75.         embraced death so freely.

  77.         elaine woke, wincing at the stiffness of 
  78.         the caked blood on her arms.
  79.  
  80.         she rose. the house was silent. she looked
  81.         around her room. something was different.
  82.  
  83.         (her journal. he had read her journal.)

  85.         she ran from the room, hurriedly searching
  86.         each room in the house. she finally found
  87.         him in her den.
  88.  
  89.         "jake? jake, are you awake?" 
  90.  
  91.         silence.
  92.  
  93.         she walked around one side of the chair
  94.         and screamed. half of his head was missing,
  95.         the rest of it splattered wildly on the
  96.         desk. the gun glinted peacefully in the
  97.         morning light, lightly dusted with
  98.         bits of brain and skull.
