  17.    This memo provides information for the Internet community.  This memo
  18.    does not specify an Internet standard of any kind.  Distribution of
  19.    this memo is unlimited.

  21. Introduction
  22.  
  23.    This RFC describes the policy for the registration of second level
  24.    domains under the ".MIL" domain.
  25.  
  26. Policy
  27.  
  28.    A.  The ".MIL" domain is delegated from the root authority to the US
  29.    Department of Defense (DoD).  Only US military services, unified or
  30.    specified commands, and operating agencies of the DoD which do not
  31.    report through military service chains can be registered as a second
  32.    level domain under the ".MIL" domain.  All other DoD organizations
  33.    will register through their respective second level domain
  34.    administrators using the registration procedures established by those
  35.    offices.  The ".MIL" domain is administered by the DoD Network
  36.    Information Center (NIC).

  38.    B.  The domain names under the ".MIL" will be descriptive of the
  39.    organization they will service.  The domain name length is preferred
  40.    to be 12 characters or less, and must be unique (first come first
  41.    serve if duplicates occur).

  43.    C.  Each second level domain under the ".MIL" domain will be
  44.    supported by at least two name servers.  Preferably these servers
  45.    will be located in two separate networks.  All DNS servers supporting
  46.    subdomains of the ".MIL" domain must be in the ".MIL" domain.

  48.    D.  Prospective second level domain administrators in the ".MIL"
  49.    domain will request registration using the template provided by the
  50.    DoD NIC.  The templates are available via anonymous FTP or
  51.    interactively via the DoD NIC World Wide Web Homepage.  The domain
  52.    request template shall be submitted to the DoD NIC hostmaster
  53.    (hostmaster@nic.ddn.mil).  The DoD NIC hostmaster will only accept
  54.    domain registration templates from registered ".MIL" users.
