  11. The DDN MANAGEMENT BULLETIN is distributed online by the DDN Network
  12. Information Center under DCA contract as a means of communicating
  13. official policy, procedures and other information of concern to
  14. management personnel at DDN facilities.  Back issues may be read
  15. through the TACNEWS server ("@n" command at the TAC) or may be
  16. obtained by FTP (or Kermit) from the NIC.DDN.MIL host [192.67.67.20]
  17. using login="anonymous" and password="guest".  The pathname
  18. for bulletins is DDN-NEWS:DDN-MGT-BULLETIN-nn.TXT (where "nn" is the
  19. bulletin number).

  22.           DEFENSE DATA NETWORK MAILBRIDGES/CORE GATEWAYS

  25. DDN Management Bulletin 74 defined MILNET gateway and host addressing
  26. assignments for acquiring Exterior Gateway Protocol (EGP) service and
  27. access to subscribers on the Internet.  Please correct the Internet
  28. address given in that bulletin for the Randolph AFB, TX mailbridge to
  29. read 26.3.0.101.  DDN Management Bulletin 74 incorrectly had this
  30. address as 26.30.0.101 (the correct host port is three, NOT thirty).

  32. In addition, it is emphasized that the 800 number provided in
  33. Bulletin 74 should only be used for questions concerning address
  34. assignments.   All other problems (e.g., line outages and cross-network
  35. connection difficulties) should be first referred to the MILNET
  36. Trouble Desk serving the geographic area of the subscriber as follows:

  49. 2.  The following is an update on actions being taken to alleviate
  50. problems being encountered with the mailbridges:
  51.  
  52.     A.  The seventh mailbridge at Randolph is scheduled for activation on 
  53. 6 Aug 90.
  54.  
  55.     B.  Cutover to the new assignments listed in DDN Management
  56. Bulletin 74 is scheduled for 10-12 Aug 90.
  57.  
  58.     C.  Selected Air Force concentrators have been modified to access only 
  59. a primary EGP server; this has resulted in a reduced demand for EGP 
  60. service.  Other gateway administrators are encouraged to take the same 
  61. action if at all possible.

  63.     D.  Software changes have been deployed and successfully tested with 
  64. Air Force concentrator gateways that permit negotiated EGP update polling 
  65. for up to sixty minute intervals (versus the defacto default of three 
  66. minute intervals).  Other gateway administrators are encouraged to use this 
  67. new feature as well.

  69.     E.  A positive exchange was held with Army, Navy, Air Force, and 
  70. industry representatives on 20 Jun 90.  This resulted in a common 
  71. understanding of the complexities associated with gateway protocols and 
  72. Internet routing issues and laid the groundwork for implementation of 
  73. protocols beneficial to all.

  75.     F.  An extended outage of the communications link between the
  76. mailbridge in McLean, VA and the Internet node at College Park, MD has
  77. had an adverse impact on traffic between the MILNET and the Internet,
  78. as well as on network gateway updates from the Internet.  This outage
  79. forces all traffic and updates to traverse the mailbridge at Moffett
  80. Field, CA and results in the inability to handle the offered traffic
  81. load and occasional loss of EGP updates.  The restoration of this
  82. vital link is being actively pursued and we are evaluating the
  83. feasibility of establishing other alternate paths between the MILNET
  84. and the Internet.  We are also working with the Army to off-load a
  85. major MILNET/Internet host traffic flow directly to the Internet.
