- Larry Scheideman said the IBM PC was just sitting in a corner doing
- nothing when he suggested that the Lakewood, CO, Department of Public
- Safety sponsor a bulletin board.
- "The idea was to try to start a dialog with the youngsters," said
- Scheideman, a 13-year police veteran. "There are a lot of them out there using
- their Apples and Commodores to do computer break-ins and saying they don't know
- what the laws are."
- Scheideman said he has made a lot of contacts with other security
- professionals through the BBS, but a lot of the young hackers have been
- reluctant to chat.
- "There are two or three hackers and phreakers that come on the board
- and answer questions. One calls himself Phos-4-Glow and it's scary how much he
- knows," Scheideman said.
- In addition to the open message sections, the board has a section
- devoted to law enforcement interests. Scheideman said the board's library
- includes several dBase programs for investigation and analysis. One program
- will take a name and generate a list of names with a similar sound.
- The board, which uses RBBS software, is open after 5 pm weekdays and
- all day Saturdays and Sundays at 303-987-7388. The department's address is 445
- S. Allison Parkway, Lakewood, CO 80226.
