This is for people with no networking experience whatsoever.
There are many more terms and things you need to know, but
this will help you on your feet when just starting out. If
you have any questions, please feel free to ask them of other
sysops in the network or of your AC/GC/NC. That's what we
are here for.
-= Frequently Used Terms =-
Callout - this simply means that one system in the network calls
another system in the network. They exchange waiting files
(which will usually be either mail, posts, or authorized updates)
If you are in a net, your system will callout to another system,
and vice-versa.
Packet - a ZIP file or an update
Net Validation - This is an option available on subs in the latest
versions of WWIV. In ROTISH, this option should ALWAYS be set to
YES. If the option is set to YES, the sysop will have to read the
messages posted on networked subs BEFORE they are sent out over the
network. It is a good idea to set this option to yes in all networks
(and a requirement in ROTISH), so that offensive or embarassing posts
will not be sent to systems all over the nation/globe.
Node - the number assigned to a system which makes up that system's
net address.
Callout Password - this is a password sent over the modem by both
systems during a callout to assure that the systems sending files
over the net are authorized and are sending the right files to the
right place.
-= Files =-
CALLOUT.NET - don't mess with it - it contains the Callout Passwords,
node numbers, and other symbols necessary for a successful callout to
exist.
BBSLIST.NET - don't mess with it - this contains a list of bbs's in
the network. It is displayed when the netlist is selected in the bbs.
CONNECT.NET - don't mess with it - this contains the information about
when and which systems connect.
SUBS.LST - browse through it - this lists all the subs that you can
subscribe to in the net. This is explained in another file.
Other files aren't really important for you to
understand.
-= Abbreviations =-
NC - Network Coordinator - head of the entire network
GC - Group Coordinator - head of a few area codes (callout to GC)
AC - Area Coordinator - head of a specific area code (callout to GC)
/^\-----------Nc -Head of net- appoints GC and AC
/_____\
/ \ ------Gc -Head of several area codes- appoints AC
/_____________\
/ \ ---Ac -head of area code- accepts
/_____________________\ and reviews applications
and sends to Nc for approval
-= Subs =-
Once in the network, you can start subscribing to subs. Some subs
may be restricted for you because of age, sex, or whether you have
registered software or not. Most subs, however are auto-requestable
making it easier to subscribe to them. If a sub IS auto-REQable:
Look through the sub list and find the subs that you like. Jot down
the SUBTYPE, FLAGS (otherwise called notes), and SUB HOST for all the
subs that you want to add to your system.
You should be familiar with adding subs to your bbs. To add networked
subs do the same thing, except also select the option for Network Info.
It should be [J]. Type that you want to add a net reference (a).
Choose the network that makes that sub available to you. Then, when
the system asks for the SUB TYPE copy down the according one.
It will ask you for the host. Enter that as well. It should understand
unless you made an error or there is an error in reading the sublist file.
When asked if you want to send a request to the host, say yes. You
will be added to the sub and be sent posts. Also note that if there
are any FLAGS saying (and there is usually a key along with the sub list)
that it is only for adults (NO ADULT SUBS IN ROTISH) or for a specific
age group or gender, only give access to those users by using AR, Rest.,
age max & min., gender, whatever. If it specifies in the sub list that
the sub is only for 255 or sysop users, then MAKE SURE that you set the
MAX and MIN SL accordingly. This is important.
This should help you in starting out. Once you are ready to HOST a sub,
talk to your AC/GC/NC.
If you have any questions, comments, or additions to this list, please
email or contact Rex 1@1 ROTISH.
