  17. Telegard BBS and Telnet, a HOWTO (or FAQ)  
  18. The purpose of this document is to explain how to allow allow telnet
  19. access to your Telegard BBS using GameSrv and NetFoss.  You could
  20. also use this as a basis for setting up any 16 bit DOS BBS program
  21. for telnet.
  22.  
  23. This document assumes you are using Windows 2000/XP/2003.  If you are
  24. using Windows 98 or ME, download and install SyncFos from
  25.  
  26. http://www.synchro.net or http://www.elebbs.com, and use it where ever
  27. you see NetFoss used.
  28.  
  29.  
  30. Step One:  Download needed files.
  31.  
  32. Download the following programs:
  33.                                                          
  34. from http://www.telegard.net = tg_309g2.zip, tg309sp3.zip,
  35. tg309sp4.zip from http://www.pcmicro.com  = NetFoss fossil driver
  36. from http://www.mannsoft.ca  = GameSrv Telnet Server from any
  37. bbs or google       = tppatch.zip (Pascal runtime 200 patch)
  38.  
  39. Step Two:  Install Telegard and apply service packs.
  40.  
  41. unzip tg_309g2 to d:\bbs
  42. run install.exe, select yes to extract, password is READYTOGO.
  43. copy telegard.exe to telegard.safe
  44. run tppatch telegard.exe
  45. run telegard.exe and answer the questions to finish installing the bbs.
  46. delete telegard.exe
  47. rename telegard.safe telegard.exe
  48. install tg309sp3 per the instructions included in the zip file.
  49. install tg309sp4 per the instructions included in the zip file.
  50.          note: the last instruction in sp4 tells you to copy the *.txt
  51.          files to the \bbs\text directory.  Copy *.msg *.scr also.

  54. Step Three:  Telegard Setup.
  55.  
  56. run Telegard -L
  57. hit ESC (Escape) for the Sysop Menu
  58. select 'S' for System Configuration
  59.  
  60. select 'A' for Modem Profile(s)
  61. select '0' for Default Profile
  62. select 'B' for Communiction port and set to COM1 select 'C' for
  63. Port information and set to IRQ 4, I/O address 03F8 select 'Q'
  64. for Quit and then press 'ENTER' to quit to System Config menu.
  65. select '*' for System Manager
  66. select 'U' for User Manager and change the all the Sysop info to
  67. reflect yourself.
  68. select 'Q' for Quit when done editing and Quit again to the WFC (Waiting
  69.                for Caller) screen.

  71. You can also at this time press the space bar to logon and check out
  72. Telegard.  Get familiar with the command the layout and you also see
  73. which files you'll need to change. When you are done, you can press
  74. 'Q' to exit the WFC screen.
  75.  
  76. Create the following file with your favorite text editor.

  82. telegard -B115200 -Q -N%1

  86. Step Four:  GameSrv Setup.
  87.  
  88. unzip GameSrv to a directory of your choosing (I suggest \gamesrv).
  89. create a shortcut on your desktop for GameSrv.
  90. Start GameSrv by clicking on it's Icon.
  91. Select the 'Config' tab.
  92. Change the Port to 23.
  93. Change the Nodes to the number of nodes you wish to run.
  94. Change Mode to External
  95. Change Visibility to Minimized
  96. Change LBY to 50 (or leave it as is)
  97. Change the Command line to:

  99.    D:\NETFOSS\NF.BAT /N*N /H*H D:\BBS\BBS.BAT *N  
  100. Change FOSSIL to None.
  101.  
  102. Click on Status and then Start.

  105. Step Five:  Install NetFoss
  106.  
  107. unzip NetFoss to a directory of your choosing (I suggest \netfoss)
  108. cd to the Netfoss directory (cd \netfoss) edit the NF.BAT file
  109. with your favorite text editor to reflect your drive and directory.

  119. If you are using Windows 98/ME, follow the instructions for
  120. setting up SyncFos in the install documentation.

  123. Step Six:  Test it.
  124.  
  125. Fire up your favorite telnet client (mTelnet is a good one) and
  126. telnet to localhost:23.  You should now have a no problem connecting
  127. to your Telegard BBS via telnet.

  131. If you encounter any problems with this FAQ/HOWTO/Bad Instructions,
  132. please let me know.  I've done most of this FAQ from memory, so if
  133. it doesn't work, I blame my faulty senile brain.  If you are using
  134. PCBoard, WWIV, or some other 16 bit DOS software, the same setup
  135. should work.

  137. The only known problem is that NetFoss does not yet allow binary
  138. transfers, so that means no Zmodem file transfers.  If you'd like
  139. to have a file section I'd suggest setting up Irex as a FTP server,
  140. since you'll need it as a Mail Server with this particular setup if
  141. you want Fidonet mail.
  142.  
  143. Another method of setting up Telegard via telnet is to use Argus
  144. to answer incoming calls, and have the user press escape to access
  145. the BBS.
  146.  
  147. If you need help, I'd suggest the Argus echo on Fidonet...although I
  148. may come up with a FAQ for that in the future.
