  1. TAG      WRITING
  2.  
  3. RULE     The Writing echo (area tag WRITING) is for the discussion of all
  4.          aspects of the art, craft, and business of writing, both fiction
  5.          and non-fiction.  It is intended for people who are actively
  6.          (not necessarily professionally) engaged in it.
  7.  
  8.          TOPICALITY AND DIGRESSIONS:
  9.          Since just about anything might be interesting to writers,
  10.          digressions are allowed -- within reason.  "Within reason"
  11.          means that a thread should be dropped when it no longer
  12.          has to do with the art, craft, and business of writing.
  13.          Before you post a message in such a thread, ask yourself
  14.          "What has this to do with writing?"  If the answer is "not
  15.          much," please don't post it here.  Messages of interest to
  16.          only one person should be sent via Netmail.
  17.  
  18.          PERPETUALLY OFF-TOPIC:
  19.          Certain topics, such as computer programming, word
  20.          processing, and movies, are covered in other echoes and are
  21.          off-topic.  Because other topics -- religion, politics,
  22.          social issues (gun control, abortion, feminism, &c.) --
  23.          spawn heated and off-topic discussions, they are not
  24.          welcome here, unless they are directly related to a
  25.          writing project you're working on.  This includes use in
  26.          taglines.  Likewise, poetry should be posted in MUSE or
  27.          POETRY_WORKSHOP.  Light poetry is also welcome in BARDROOM.
  28.          Please keep poesy out of the WRITING area.

  31.          SLAMMING OTHER ECHOES:  Although some in other areas may make
  32.          disparaging remarks about WRITING due to misunderstanding or
  33.          even mulish stupidity, we should stand above that sophomoric
  34.          behavior.  Let them run their conferences as they wish; we will
  35.          do the same.  Don't stoop to their level.
  36.  
  37.          ADVERTISING:  Advertising via an amateur computer network is
  38.          a tricky situation at best.  It generally wastes bandwidth
  39.          and can endanger the residential telephone rates most BBSs
  40.          depend on.  Thus, no items or services may be offered for sale
  41.          in the WRITING echo which would be of direct economic benefit to
  42.          the person posting the ad.  To reduce bandwidth usage, no ads
  43.          for other echoes or BBSs may be posted.  Helping someone find
  44.          a book or other item, or recommending publication markets is
  45.          allowable, as are notices of contests (those not involving an
  46.          entry fee). Due to controversy, no ads soliciting submissions
  47.          for publications may be posted directly in the echo.  Before doing
  48.          so, please get permission from one of the moderators.

  50.          ETIQUETTE:
  51.          Personal abuse, attacks, and other counterproductive
  52.          behavior will <b>not</b> be tolerated, and can result in the
  53.          offender's being removed from the echo.  Vigorous,
  54.          spirited, heated debate is terrific; vindictive sniping is
  55.          not.  The Moderator is the sole authority on what
  56.          constitutes proper behavior.
  57.  
  58.          TRAFFIC:
  59.          Please limit your messages to no more than _fifteen per day_.
  60.          If you've had a problem resulting in a buildup of messages (or
  61.          other good excuse), you may exceed this count, as long as the
  62.          privilege is not abused.  High message counts will make
  63.          the moderator take a close look at your topicality ratio.
  64.          When possible, combine several messages to the same person
  65.          into one larger message.
  66.  
  67.          WRITING SAMPLES:
  68.          Participants may post <b>brief</b> excerpts of their writing
  69.          for critique:  no more than 60 lines.  The cost of sending
  70.          longer excerpts around the country is prohibitive.  Post
  71.          only those excerpts you have <b>specific</b> problems with or
  72.          <b>specific</b> questions about, and list your questions when
  73.          you post the excerpt.  The usual way to exchange longer
  74.          works is to trade addresses and use the mail.
  75.  
  76.          COMPLAINTS:
  77.          Complaints regarding personal attacks or counterproductive
  78.          behavior should be sent <b>privately</b> -- via Netmail,
  79.          internet, or a telephone call -- to the Moderator.  Please
  80.          remember:  never attribute to malice what can be
  81.          adequately explained by the vagaries of Fidonet.
  82.          Complaints about topicality, either in general or aimed at
  83.          a specific user, are also off-topic, as they cause more
  84.          off-topic traffic.  Contact the Moderator privately.
  85.  
  86.          HIGH-ASCII and SIGNATURE BLOCKS :
  87.          The so-called high-ASCII extended characters (line-draws,
  88.          accents, &c.) can cause problems on non-IBM screens.
  89.          Please don't use them in the text of messages, either as a
  90.          function of your quoting or part of your text.  Also, FidoNet is
  91.          an amateur network; ordinary folks have to chip in to move these
  92.          messages around.  Accordingly, internet-style signature blocks
  93.          and other extraneous material is prohibited in the WRITING echo.

  95.          HANDLES AND ANONYMOUS POSTS
  96.  
  97.          Anonymous posts are prohibited in the WRITING echo.  The use of
  98.          handles is generally discouraged and prohibited unless a) the
  99.          true identity of the poster is known to the Moderator, and b)
  100.          use of a handle by that poster is approved by the Moderator.

  102.          MISC:
  103.          That's it, except that if someone comes up with a new and
  104.          improved way to aggravate all and sundry I reserve the
  105.          right to make a rule to fit the occasion.
