  1.                     MUSIC Conference Rules
  2.  
  3. "Participation in the MUSIC ECHO is a privilege not a right. It's like
  4. driving a car. A DWI or two will get you talked about <smile> as well
  5. as your license revoked." (Author Unknown)

  7. MUSIC is a general message oriented echo. Conversation is encouraged.
  8. Debate is encouraged. All discussions are open to anyone who wishes to
  9. join in. Keep the discussion relevant to MUSIC. While some cross-
  10. subject topics are inevitable (i.e. drugs or AIDS while discussing
  11. certain musicians), don't get carried away.
  12.  
  13. The MODERATOR may not always be right, but his decisions are final
  14. unless she / he says otherwise. A minimum of Moderator activity is
  15. intentionally maintained.
  16.  
  17. The MODERATOR may post his own opinions, and argue freely and
  18. completely with anyone, as an individual. Moderator messages are
  19. labeled as such. If they do not explicitly state they are from the
  20. Moderator, and not just from Chuck Allen, you may freely argue with
  21. any of his enlightened opinions without fear of moderator reprisal.
  22. In addition, the Moderator will enforce these rules without prejudice,
  23. whether or not she / he agrees with anything you may say.
  24.  
  25. QUOTING is REQUIRED. If you don't know how to quote, then you MUST
  26. indicate in the message what the original point you are disagreeing,
  27. agreeing, or discussing with was about (recap). While you and the
  28. recipient may know what you are talking about, the object is to let
  29. _everybody_ know what you are talking about.
  30.  
  31. DON'T OVERQUOTE. Do not quote Tag lines or Origin lines unless they're
  32. important to your reply. The idea is to remind the readers about what
  33. you're discussing, not give a complete recap of the conversation. In
  34. addition, do not quote 15 lines of text only to write "I agree."
  35.  
  36. DEBATE

  38. This echo carries an extremely small level of traffic, and, as such,
  39. there is also an extreme divergence of views. Be prepared to have one
  40. person jump on you for a statement which you consider offhand or
  41. harmless. Always remember that somewhere out there is someone who will
  42. disagree completely with your most reasoned arguments, and that logic
  43. will not always convince that person, especially in the matter of
  44. musical tastes, and whether or not Group A is better than Group B.
  45.  
  46. With all that said, here are the conference rules:

  48.  Rule 1:       BOOTLEGS AND OTHER ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES
  49.  
  50.       This conference is not to be used for any illegal purpose
  51. whatsoever. This includes, but is not limited to, arrangements
  52. for the illegal copying or distribution of copyrighted material.
  53. Yes, this includes bootlegs as well as taped copies of albums and
  54. CDs. If you absolutely must conspire to break the law, do it via
  55. direct netmail, NOT via this conference.
  56.  
  57.       Your sysop may be liable if you do use this echo for illegal
  58. purposes. As a result, this is quite possibly the rule that will
  59. be most strictly enforced by the Moderator. It is expected that
  60. you will police yourself in dealing with this matter. However, if
  61. you do not, and you are called on it, you will be expected to
  62. immediately end all relevant conversation.

  64.  Rule 2:                NO FLAMING
  65.  
  66.       Treat others as you would like to be treated. Personal attacks
  67. are NEVER permitted. It is possible to disagree with people on
  68. MANY subjects and still be friends, or at least treat each other
  69. in a friendly manner.
  70.  
  71.  Rule 3: Do not be easily offended. Keep in mind that no one is
  72. forcing you to be here, and no one is forcing you to read
  73. messages that cause psychotic behavior in you. You are free to
  74. either hit the N)ext message key or to move to a more compatible
  75. environment.

  77.  Rule 4:                STAY ON TOPIC
  78.  
  79.       Confine your messages to the subject matter of the conference.
  80. There are many other echomail conferences for the discussion of
  81. many other topics. The topic of this conference is MUSIC and
  82. messages posted here should be relevant to that topic. Please
  83. note that any response to an off-topic message is also off-topic.
  84. If you see an off-topic message, DO NOT POST A RESPONSE. The
  85. preferred response is to simply ignore it. If you feel you cannot
  86. ignore the posting, send netmail to the author of the message, or
  87. to the moderator. If you post a response, you are just as much in
  88. violation of the rules as the original poster is.

  90.  Rule 5:                NO ADS/PERSONAL MESSAGES
  91.  
  92.       This conference is not to be used for advertisement or
  93. personal messages. If you have an ad you wish to post, do it in
  94. the appropriate conference, not here. If you have a personal
  95. conversation you wish to conduct, do it via netmail. Messages
  96. posted here should only be those of possible interest to a
  97. significant number of the participants.

  99.  Rule 6: Each system operator that receives this conference is
  100. responsible for any and all traffic that enters this conference
  101. from his system. This does not include in transit messages from
  102. other systems receiving the conference, but DOES include messages
  103. from users of the system, and any point operators of the system.

  105.  Rule 7: A few words on profanity:
  106.  
  107.   1) Please restrain yourself. Is the offending word necessary? Or
  108. are you just trying to tick someone off? The only time profanity
  109. is acceptable is in the form of a quote from lyrics in a
  110. pertinent context.
  111.  
  112.   2) If you find such a word necessary, please use an asterisk (*)
  113. in place of a vowel. If the appearance of the word itself is
  114. offensive to the receiver, then you will be able to convey your
  115. message without actually having to rub anyone's nose in it.
  116.  
  117.   3) Anyone who is swearing is assuming the risk that the moderator
  118. will find its continued use excessively annoying, and will take
  119. appropriate action.

  121.  Rule 8:                         ENGLISH
  122.  
  123.       English is the "official" language of this echo. I have done
  124. this in order to allow the most people possible to understand all
  125. the conversations. Please refrain from posting in other languages
  126. (at least without a translation).

  128. These rules are not intended to restrict discussion, but rather to
  129. focus it on the conference topic. If you have comments or questions
  130. about these rules or the conference in general please send them via
  131. netmail to the conference moderator(s) at the net address(es) given
  132. below. If you have any questions on how to use netmail, the system
  133. operator of the BBS you are reading this on should be able to help.
  134. Comments, questions, and suggestions are more than welcome, and will
