I. Introduction.
One of the ways to keep your users calling is by keeping a well-stocked file
section! The easiest and cheapest way to do that is to add a CDROM drive and
a BBS-Ready disk. There are hundreds of BBS-Ready titles to choose from --
from shareware programs to unusual graphics -- and most are less than $20.
I've found the best assortment of BBS-Ready CDs at the local computer shows,
but you can mail-order from nearly any PC magazine.
After you've found the right CD, adding the files it contains is when your
hassle begins! First, you must create a conference to hold the directories.
Then, you must go into //DIREDIT and add each directory with a unique name,
description, DSL, etc. Finally, you can log onto the BBS, change to each area
and execute //UPLOADFILE, over and over. It is so frustrating that many
sysops don't even try! Instead, they use an external CDROM "door" program so
users can download from the CD. By doing so, they lose the integration with
WWIV's native file section, which has often been modified to be exactly what
they and their users wanted.
Enter ADDCDROM! Like all Cerebrum products, ADDCDROM! was created to address
a shortcoming in the stock WWIV BBS package. ADDCDROM! accomplishes all of
the steps needed to add a new CD to your BBS with no effort! It scans the CD
structure and adds directories with a FILES.BBS to your file section, places
them in a conference you name and, finally, goes through each directory and
uploads the files. (It even extracts and uses the internal FILE_ID.DIZ from
each file as a description, if you desire).
II. Installation.
I wrote ADDCDROM! to be as easy as possible to use. Simply place ADDCDROM.EXE
into your BBS main directory and run it. It will prompt you for the letter of
your CDROM drive, the name for the Conference and a DSL to assign to the areas
you're adding. ADDCDROM! does the rest!
III. Error Handling.
ADDCDROM! accounts for many common errors, e.g. executing it from the wrong
directory, modified record structures which might make it incompatible, etc.
In addition, it creates backups of the WWIV data files it modifies, DIRS.DAT
and DIRS.CNF, by copying them to new files and changing the final letters to
the number of the CD you've just added, e.g. DIRS.D01 and DIRS.C01 would be
created as backups when you add your first CD. Should you wish to restore
your previous configuration, just copy them back to their original names and
overwrite the ones created by ADDCDROM!
IV. Registration.
ADDCDROM! is the product of months of work. Its simplicity is the result of
a great deal of testing and programming. I sincerely thank those sysops who
registered in the absence of a release version. This release is testimonial
to their trust and support of that effort.
The unregistered version of ADDCDROM! allows adding one CDROM to your BBS.
This is a fair way, I believe, of allowing you to evaluate its benefits while
encouraging your registration. When you realize that ADDCDROM! accomplished
in 30 seconds what would have taken you several hours, the $15 registration
seems trivial.
If you have a printer attached to your BBS machine, ADDCDROM! can print the
order form for you. Just stick it in an envelope with your check or money
order! If you don't have a printer, complete the enclosed ORDER.FRM and send
it to:

Remember to include your BBS telephone number, exactly as it appears in INIT,
or I can't generate a registration number for you!

VI. About Cerebrum
Cerebrum is a group of loosely-affiliated but highly-talented programmers who
are working to improve the availability and quality of the modifications and
utilities available to WWIV sysops. Look for the other, high-quality Cerebrum
products on any WWIV support BBS. Remember, you contribute to the future of
WWIV by registering the Cerebrum products you use!
If you are interested in hosting Cerebrum products on your own BBS as a
Cerebrum Support Site, contact Dawg @2121.WWIVNET for an application.
