Each game has complete instructions and features shown inside The Casino, to
save space, I won't duplicate them here. Please go to the [H]elp counter for
complete game descriptions.
>>> Summary <<<
Castle Rock Casino is the house of (count 'em) SIX gambling games, including:
BlackJack, Video Poker, EagleWild Slots, Las Vegas Solitaire, a HighCut table,
and the Lottery scratch-off tickets, each described inside of The Casino.
The Main Menu is an overhead view of The Casino showing all of the different
modules graphically. The Casino also has a lounge where you can view all the
current scores, last month's scores, the Hall of Fame, and the Daily News.
Castle Rock even has a bathroom where players can write messages on the wall,
send private messages to other "users", read their own private mail, or just
sit, read the wall, and relax.
When a player runs out of money, they have the options of selling their time
(does not affect actual BBS time), taking a loan from the in-house bank, or
borrow from another player, if they can come to terms. At Castle Rock Savings
and Loan you can make cash withdrawals, deposits, take out loans, make a loan
payment, transfer money to other players, and sell some of your time.
There is an extensive on-line help system that can be visited at the [H]elp
counter, please see this for even more info.
Gameplay is regulated only by a set time limit, the default is 30 minutes per
day per person. There is a 15 minute maximum for the evaluation version. If a
player runs out of time while in the game, he loses all money he has on hand,
but not what's in his account. This is the equivalent of staying out too late
and getting beat up and robbed. This is written to the Daily News for public
humiliation.
!!! PLEASE NOTE: Game time is assigned at the beginning of each day; if you
change the time limit, it will not take effect for current players until
the next day; new players will get the new time immediately.
>>> Castle Rock Savings and Loan <<<
Castle Rock Savings and Loan has an in-house banking machine where all of the
players will handle their finances. The Casino will automatically deposit the
set money amount into a new player's account; this amount is set by the Sysop
but defaults to $500.
The ATM menu options:
> Withdrawals: The first thing each player will need to do is to withdraw
some spending money. Selecting this will allow withdrawals.
There is a $1 fee for this transaction.
> Deposits: It is not necessary to deposit ON HAND money back into your
account each day, but the 5% interest is _not_ drawn on the
money that is ON HAND. There is a $1 fee for all deposits.
> Sell time: Each day, every player is allowed to sell 1/2 of their time
remaining, one time. The value for each minute sold is set
by the Sysop; the default is $5 per minute. This DOES NOT
affect actual BBS time, only their time in The Casino.
> Take a loan: If a player runs out of money, he has the option of taking
out a loan at a steep 20% interest, compounded immediately,
i.e. if $500 is borrowed, then $600 is now the loan balance.
The maximum loan amount per day, per player is setup by the
Sysop; the default is $500.
> Loan payment: Each day that a user enters The Casino with an outstanding
loan balance, a payment of 10% of the original loan is due.
If a player does not play a day, a payment is not required.
If a payment is not made, a 5% penalty of the outstanding
balance is added onto the loan. This option will allow them
to make the loan payment. This info is written to the Daily
News, along with when a player pays off the loan.
> Transfers: Players are allowed to transfer money to others; maybe they
can negotiate a loan at a lower interest rate. The maximum
transfer amount is set by the sysop, and defaults to $1000
per day. A last transfer day should be set to keep players
from teaming up at the end of the month. The default is the
25th. The receiving player will get a private message from
the bank confirming this transaction. This transaction will
also be written to the Daily News for all to see.
>>> The Lounge <<<
The Lounge is where players will go to get the low-down on what all has been
going on in The Casino. These options are available from there:
[1] Read the Daily News - After this option is selected, the players will
be asked which day they would like to view. All
days where someone played are available to see.
This will default to the current date. The news
file, "DAILY__N.EWS", is deleted monthly.
[2] View current summary - This is the main scores screen; it displays all
players ranked by score. It shows their gross
and net totals (Total-loans). It also displays
the total number of minutes that every player
has played this month.
[3] View individual games- This shows how each player is doing in each of
the games; here you can see which are the "hot"
games this month.
[4] Last month's scores - This option will display everyone's scores from
last month, if LASTMNTH.TOP exists.
[5] View the Hall of Fame- The Hall of Fame file is updated each month; it
contains the top 10 all-time high scores in The
Casino.
[0] Return to The Casino - Returns you to the Main screen.
>>> The Bathroom <<<
Generally speaking, there is not much you can say about a bathroom, unless of
course, you are at Castle Rock Casino. There's quite a few things to do in my
bathroom besides the normal... uh... well, let's move along.
[1] THE WALL
The main attraction in the bathroom is "The Wall". Yes, the local hooligans
can actually write on this bathroom wall. If they're clever enough, they can
even write using colors. This is not documented in The Casino, so you'll have
to let everyone know about it. I usually write something in color, then when
someone asks about it, I make them transfer $100 to my account. Then I write
them private mail telling them how to do it!
The colors are activated by beginning the message with a certain character.
Here they are:
\ white
/ yellow
- light green
+ light cyan
= light red
& light magenta
% light blue
$ brown
example: "/This is a message on the bathroom wall." would write it in yellow.
[2] CHANGE ALIAS
If a player decides to change his alias, he'll have to do it in the bathroom.
There is a fee for doing this though, the default is $100, but you can raise
it or lower it if you want. This information is written to the Daily News so
everyone will know about the change, if they read the news.
[3] SEND PRIVATE MAIL
Players can send private, one-line messages to other "users". These messages,
along with the sender and receiver, are written to PRIVATE.MSG. When a player
enters The Casino, and has mail waiting, it will notify him at the beginning
so that he will know when there is mail waiting.
[4] READ PRIVATE MAIL
If a player has some mail waiting, he can go to the bathroom and select this
option to read it. After he reads it and leaves the bathroom, The Casino will
delete it. At times The Casino or Castle Rock S/L will send mail to a player.
When a new player enters The Casino, the management will welcome him, and the
bank will notify him that some money was deposited to his account to get him
started. The bank will also notify players if they miss a loan payment, or if
another player transfers some money to their account. When a player wins the
progressive jackpot, management congratulates him and also gives the player
recognition by automatically writing it on the wall.
>>> The Statistics Room <<<
The Statistics Room holds a wealth of information about the player and about
The Casino. It shows the player's complete financial situation, along with all
of the game settings: max bets, pay-outs, solitaire info, bank limits, etc.
>>> Epilogue <<<
All of this may sound complex at the start, but players will get the hang of
it. It takes a while, but most of the features will be used. I have seen that
it takes a week or so for some to feel comfortable enough to use the messages
and loans, but eventually they will.

Take your time and make subtle changes to the default configuration options.
I spent about three weeks tweaking them in to where all of the games paid out
somewhat equally. You can mar the game by making the max bets too high or too
low. For example: If you set the maximum bet in the slots to $99, it's harder
to play because many people won't want to bet $99 on each pull with the [M]ax
coins option, so they'll have to increment their bet $1 at a time.
Be careful about giving your players too much time in the registered version,
they will most likely sell everything over 20 minutes. Of course, this would
be a benefit to the players prone to losing their shirts. I have had players
that have to sell time each day to make their loan payments!
If you'd like to make the game real interesting, set the Jackpot increment to
$10 or so; it will build up faster that way. The odds on winning the Jackpot
are in the neighborhood of 1:10,000. If you have quite a few players playing
regularly, it should be won once or twice a month... as odds go. :)
You can also raise the starting amount of the Jackpot to get it on up there.
BlackJack and HighCut are where you can make the largest changes, the players
can only win 2x their bet in BlackJack and 4x in HighCut, so it is safe to
raise them up quite a bit. The players have a pretty good chance of losing
as much as they win, but the opportunity is there to make a ton, or go bust.
The fourth dealer in BlackJack is configurable by you. You may choose to use
your own name here and allow the players to play against you! This dealer is
also used in the rotation of dealers in HighCut.
All of these games are based on random numbers, taken from your system clock.
There are no restrictions whatsoever in my code! The Progressive Jackpot may
never be won, or it might be won ten times the first week. The pay-off on the
Slot machine is somewhere around 98%; I have gone 400 or more pulls without
hitting 3 sevens, then I hit them 2 times in 10 pulls. (I've never hit all 3
banners, but it's been done on my board twice.)

See !README.1ST for complete set-up instructions and installation tips.
There are several files that are created during program execution; these are
outlined below.
CASINO.DF1
This is the primary binary data file that holds all of the player records and
scores for the entire month.
CASINO.DF2
This binary file stores the current month and day, last month's champ, Hall
of Fame members, and a few other items necessary for the program to have.
CASINO.ANS
ANSI scores bulletin. (These files are optional and are updated each time
a player exits from The Casino)
CASINO.ASC
ASCII scores bulletin.
DAILY__N.EWS
This text file will hold all of the Daily News from The Casino. It will be
automatically deleted each month.
PRIVATE.MSG
This text file will contain any private messages sent between players or sent
to a player from The Casino or the Bank. This text file will be automatically
deleted each month. Individual private messages are deleted after they have
been read by the recipient.
WALL.MSG
This text file will be created to hold the messages written on "The Wall" in
the bathroom. This file will not be deleted each month.
ACTIVITY.LOG
This text file is optional; it will track The Casino's usage. It can also be
optionally automatically deleted each month. It will also show who wrote what
on the wall. I included this so that you will know who is writing those nasty
messages. :)
LASTMNTH.TOP
This text file will be created after the first month of play. It will contain
last month's scores that can be viewed in the Lounge.
!If an abnormal exit occurs, a file named ERROR.LOG will be generated holding
information that will help us track down the problem. If you need assistance,
please have this file available.

The Casino will automatically maintain itself with the first player of each
day and of each month.
Daily maintenance includes:
> Initializing the Daily News file.
> Adding 5% interest to all money IN ACCOUNT for all players.
> Adding a 5% penalty to the loans of all of the players who failed to make

> Sends a private message to each penalized user and writes it to the Daily
News for more public humiliation.
Monthly maintenance includes the following:
> The player file will be re-initialized with no players.
> All loans will be paid off, sometimes resulting in a negative score. :)
> LASTMNTH.TOP will be updated with the new last month's scores.
> The record file will be updated with new Hall of Fame members (if any).
> The progressive jackpot will be reset to the configuration value.
> The PRIVATE.MSG file will be deleted.

One problem that plagues most card-based door games is the Club character not
appearing on the cards on the remote end.
This can be controlled by the user. Some communication programs default to ON
for CompuServe quick B file transfers (sometimes called CIS-B or Enquiry). If
it is set to ON, the communication program will strip the ASCII Code #005,
which is the CLUB character used on the cards. Have your users set this to OFF
if the Club character does not appear on the cards. This configuration option
can usually be found in the user's comm program's Terminal Set-up area.
