A major portion of this software was written by Scott Baker. Mr.
Baker's Doordriver kit is used for the communications and interrupt
handling and this part of the software remains copyrighted by him.
EAW2 is distributed under the Shareware concept. You are allowed to
operate EAW2 for a trial period of forty-five (45) days. After this
trial period, you must register EAW2 or discontinue its usage.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
REGISTRATION
Registration of EAW2 is mandatory if you wish to continue using EAW2 past the
forty-five day trial period. Eaw2.20 versions allows up to 99 games to be run
from the same door. Without registration no Guards or Grenadier units may be
purchased or cashiered.
Sysop Instructions:
Empires at War supports a multitude of different BBS systems.
Setup:
Step 1: Create a Sub-Directory of called EAW2.
Move EAW2.zip to this directory.
Once there type <path>pkunzip -d EAW2.zip
This will create and load the correct sub-directories with the proper
data base files.
Step 2. If you did not use the -d switch then you will have to create 3 sub-
directories of EAW2; called DATA, HELP and MENU.
All .exe and .ovr programs files should be the EAW2 directory.
All .dat, ix and .eaw files should be in DATA and all helpX.txt should
be put into HELP. All MenuX.txt files should be put into the MENU
directory.
C:-- EAW2
|__ DATA
|__ HELP
|__ MENU
Step 3. Customize the EAW2.CTL file. This is a file that contains crucial
information that EAW2 needs to run. The EAW2.CTL file itself explains
what information it needs. If you have fossil drivers be sure to
uncomment the 'fossil' option. If you have a modem set to a non-std
IRQ be sure to use the PORT# option for that com port.
Where to put this file?
Put this file wherever you are running EAW2GAME.exe from. If you are
running multi-node you should put a copy in each node directory and
run from there. If you change directory to the EAW2 directory put
the file here.
Step 4. In order to run the (online) EAW2GAME.exe program the following
parameters may be used.
"/Bxxxxx" This tells EAW2GAME.exe to lock its baud rate at
xxxxx. In order to get the most efficiency out of a high speed
error correcting modem (9600 baud or above), you may lock the baud
rate to a speed higher than what the caller is actually using.
By locking the baud to say 38,400, the modem can compress text data
that is being sent and achieve a baud rate much higher than the
actual transmission rate.
This will lock the baud rate at the same value for all nodes that
use this command line. If you perfer a more selective way to lock
baud use 'LOCKBAUD' command in the EAW2.ctl file.
"/Cx" (where x is 1..4) This specifies a comport number.
Some bbs software does not create door information files (dropfiles)
that contain the comport number. If your bbs does have a comport
listed in the dropfile then there is no need for this parameter.
The default is comport 0, local mode.
"/E" - Expanded Memory Specification - If your machine has over
one megabyte of memory, then you may have some available. EAW2 can
utilize EMS to improve game performance and reduce conventional
memory requirements.
This command will tell EAW2GAME.exe to use EMS memory to hold its
overlay buffer. Otherwise disc area may be used to hold this buffer.
This needs a memory manager and when enabled and is compatible with
DESQview.
"/L" This tells EAW2GAME.exe to load up in LOCAL mode.
This is good for testing or when a sysop just wants to "try out" the
door without messing with his BBS setup. The "/L" mode will ask the
user for his name and run the door in local mode.
"/Nx" (where x is 1..9) This specifies a "node
number". Some bbs software support multinode environments
in which you must know the node number of the drop file to
use. For example, RBBS-PC uses DORINFOx.DEF. If you
specified "/N2" then EAW2GAME.exe would use DORINFO2.DEF.
"/Pyyy" This specifies the PATH to the drop files.
For example, "/PC:\WC30\WCWORK\NODE1" would tell EAW2GAME.exe
to look for the drop files in C:\WC30\WCWORK\NODE1.
Two sample .bat files are included --> Door1.bat.
--> Door2.bat.
Step 5. Turn maintenance program EAW2TURN.exe can be run 1,2,3...7 times a
week or however often the sysop wants. This updates the game
data, processes moves and battles.
Do not start this until all 6 players in the game have signed up
and have done their first turns move.
Parameters:
"x" (Where x is 1,2...). This tells the EAW2TURN program to run
the turn for game #x. List the game numbers to be run as
parameters. (Do not use "/" here).
Example:
cd \BBS\doors\eaw2
c:\BBS\doors\EAW2\EAW2TURN.exe 1 2 3 5
cd \BBS
This tells EAW2TURN to run the turns for games 1,2,3 and 5.
"/A" This directs EAW2turn to be run automatically for all
games that have the full 6 players.
Completed games are skipped. Number parms are ignored.
A log file (EAW2TURN.log) is created in the DATA directory. This
can be made into a bulletin in order to notify players that their
game has started.
A sample event file (EVENT1.bat) is included.
Step 6. To insure proper multi-node operation DOS SHARE must be loaded prior to
the game and prior to DESQview.
EAW2UTIL: Included is a utility program called EAW2UTIL. This program allows
the sysop to change players in an ongoing game. It also provides
crutial setup information for BBS to BBS or offline player play using
the EAW2BBS program.
EAW2BBS: This is a program that extracts and integrates bbs to bbs records.
Game records can be extracted and sent to remote sites. There the
game can be played as if it were local. Then the completed turns can
be sent back to the host. The host will run the turn and the
completed turn sent back to the remote site. In fact several remote
bbs's can play together in the same game at a common host.
Upgrade:
New Database features have been added. Please re-installed the game if you
are running any version before 2.50.
OTHER FEATURES:
SYSMESS.TXT
This is a message that can appear on the opening screen. The sysop can
create, edit or remove it at any time.
This can be used to beg for money or for announcements.
This can be up to 4 lines of 72+ character text. The first line appears
red the others brown. To be used it must be in the EAW2 directory.
RIP ICONS
Also included is a zipped icon file (EAW2ICON.zip). This should be put
into your file area for downloading by players.
SECRET RIP MAP
If using Rip and the user has the EAW1.icn in his Icons directory then
he can see the central area in Rip by pressing 'R' key at the Geo map.
COMMON ERRORS
201 Files not found. Check to make sure that there are files in the Data
subdirectory.
208 Overlay file not found. Your setup or door bat file is incorrect.
This game uses considerable memory space. The way to gain the greatest
memory space is to shell the bbs software to disk when running doors,
especially when using a front door and fossils.
This game also allows opening of 30 files at a time.
HISTORY
1986: Empires at War was originally concieved as a board game for 6 players.
Though play was fun it was tedious with a great amount of bookkeeping.
Trying to find 5 or 6 warm bodies who wanted to play was quite a
problem, especially when countries like Prussia and Turkey are
relatively weak. When the game became known as 'Roll a Six and Pillage
Byzantium' amoung my friends it was time to find new players.
1990: With the exposure to BBS's it became evident that this was the media
that EAW needed. The computer could handle all the bookkeeping and
leave the players free to concentrate on strategy.
5'92: The 1.00 version of the game could only be played through the use of
the Doorway program. But, this worked quite well for me. When released
to the public the response to this setup was underwhelming.
9'92: A second game based on the same system, Romans at War, was completed
and released.
5'93: The 2.00 version of the EAW no longer uses Doorway, but uses the
internal modem handling software from Scott Baker's Doordriver kit.
6'93: The 2.10 version allows up to 4 games to be played by an unregistered
version. It also allows the EAW2 to be put in any subdirectory.
7'93: 2.11 /A parm (automatic play) for EAW2Turn added. EAW2Turn.log file
displays what game turn(s) were last updated. Minor errors corrected.
Also EAW2turn now cross-checks navies and armies for missing leaders.
9'93 2.12 Has a more user friendly setup routine. The /z parm is not needed
at all if cd to the EAW2 directory.
10'93 2.20 No guard/grenadier units can be purchased in unregistered games,
but up to 99 games can now be run. Made a few minor comm routine changes
in preparation for 28.8k modems.
11'93 2.21 Selected countries and cities now are shown as "X" or shaded dots
when remote is in Rip mode. In eaw2.ctl RBBS Dorinfo# ansi graphics
mode is now different than Dorinfo# of Quick, Remote Access and others.
Previously color1 option was used to fix color mode.
12'93 2.22 No ship builds allowed in captured ports. Delay move '5' now does
not cost additional for terrain type. Fixed problem with battle report
not reporting battles where you were defender one turn ago.
1 '94 2.30 A lot of Rip graphics has been added to the game. The map however
remains ansi. Internal comm routines will set port speed to maximum
possible if rate is over 115,200. Eaw2util and Eaw2Turn rebuild move
(turn) data bases. The /Z parm has been eliminated.
5 '94 2.40 Completely rewritten data base interaction to support networks as
long as DOS share is installed. Close port (except X00 ext ) upon exiting.
This will keep the OS/2 serial I/O drivers,SIO from aborting the DOS
session.
Sysmess.txt added.
Resupply added.
Opening graphical rip map added.
Icons changed to new coloring scheme.
Interbbs capablity added.
6 '94 2.50 Data Base format changed slightly to allow more players to be
defined for inter-bbs play.
10'94 2.51 Fixed some fossil problems otherwise no changes.
