II. WHAT IS BORD? ------------------------------------------
BORD stands for Bazooka of the Red Dragon. It is an online door game
for systems that read dorinfo1.def or door.sys dropfiles. (SuperBBS, Remote
Access, RBBS, QBBS, TELNET systems)
You might call BORD a LORD Clone, because that's what it it. How-
ever, there are many LORD clones out there; BORD is different because it does
not just COPY LORD, it MAKES FUN of it too! Plus, as BORD has progressed, it
has gathered many more features that make it recognizable as its own, stand-
alone, game. Because of its similarity to LORD, there is no new plot to
learn, no new keys to look for--very easy to play! But it is by no means
simple, and contains many areas for your advanced gamers to look forward to.
BORD combines multi-player combat, messaging, and other ways of int-
eracting in a colourful, user-friendly, online environment (although it can
also be played locally without a BBS). It will take anywhere from 2 to 15
minutes of user time each day the user plays. For MULTINODE systems, users
must wait until the current player is finished playing before they are all-
owed in (we had all kinds of problems with true MUD capability). While they
are waiting, they can play a BORD-ish arcade game, and BORD will notify them
when the other player is done.
Each player is expected to play every once and a while to keep
the game interesting, preferably once per day. This adds to the overall
competitiveness of the game, and makes things interesting. However, many
computerized players will add to the game if only a few people are playing.
III. SET-UP-------------------------------------------------
- Put BORD210D.ZIP in its own directory, eg. C:\BBS\BORD\BORD210D.ZIP
- Uncompress it (you did this already if you are reading this).
- Run BORDEDIT.EXE first. **Very Important!**
- Enter your locked baud rate if you have one, eg. 38400
- Turn OFF Fossil support only if you don't use a fossil driver.
- Use the Batch File Wizard to create BORD2.BAT in your BBS's root directory.
Here's basically what it makes:
@echo off
copy c:\bbs\dorinfo1.def c:\bbs\bord\dorinfo1.def '<-IMPORTANT
cd c:\bbs\bord
bord.exe
cd c:\bbs\
**NOTE: Most Sysops use a separate batch file for each door, which is what
the batch file wizard is for. All that this batch file must do is
copy the dropfile to BORD's directory, run BORD from BORD's dir-
ectory, and return to the working BBS directory. If you run your
doors using a different means, then by all means do so. Just rem-
ember that BORD MUST BE RUN FROM ITS OWN DIRECTORY, AND MUST READ
THE DROPFILE FROM ITS OWN DIRECTORY. That's all. ;-)
- You will need to setup your BBS software to call this cool batch file.
SuperBBS uses a Type 7: *C /C bord2.bat *N *S, but every BBS is different.
Just set it up like any other door.
- If you want to play locally, return to DOS and type: BORD -L.
IV. UPGRADING FROM VERSIONS BEFORE 2.00 -------------------------
BORD has undergone MAJOR changes since the previous versions.
Sadly and shortly, you CANNOT upgrade, because of changes to PLAYER.DAT's
structure. We decided that it would not be worth it to make a conversion
utility, and that a fresh re-install would be best! Sorry, but it's worth
it! RE-INSTALL THE GAME FROM SCRATCH.
UPGRADING FROM BORD 2.0x------------------------------------
You must replace the old bord.exe, bordedit.exe, and all.dis with
the new files. However, a full upgrade from scratch works, too.
UPGRADING FROM BORD 2.10
You only need to replace the old bord.exe and all.dis.
V. PLAYING THE GAME ----------------------------------------
BORD is a menu-driven Role Playing Game (RPG). When the opening
screen comes up, simply press 'v' to venture into the game.... You'll
see a screen come up that asks you for your name...blah blah blah...easy
enough. The Daily news will come up sometime...as will your current stat-
ics. Have a look around and check things out. It is a good idea to
F)ight first, because you get experience and Pebbles (money). Secret #1:
Pressing 'b' from the forest deposits all your pebbles. You can also do
it from the Streets by pressing 'y.' Once you have enough pebbles, you
can sell your current weapon at Bazooka Bob's and buy a new one.
You should play regularly enough to not waste disk space by being
a pain in the neck to the other players who wish you would play more often!
The object of the game is to advance enough levels until you defeat the
dragon. When you defeat the dragon, you become the dragon, and you get to
do neat stuff for awhile until someone defeats YOU.
Also, building a fort empire can be a bonus :) (Explore!)
There are many, many things to be discovered...
VI. TROUBLESHOOTING ----------------------------------------
Hopefully you will not have any problems, but just in case, you can

OK, here's the FAQ part of Every TROUBLESHOOTING guide:
2) Q: I have registered, and my reg.key file says UNREGISTERED.
A: Try typing it into BORDEDIT again. If it still doesn't work,
contact us (address above) and we'll give you a new one.
Also, make sure that you typed in the correct Sysop Name.
3) Q: BORD freezes up or drops carrier.
A: This should not happen. But, try fiddling with Locked Baud
Rate and other settings a little, then contact the author, or
maybe contact a friend who might be able to help you fix it.
4) Q: I don't like the names of the monsters.
A: Too bad <g>. You can change monster NAMES with BORDEDIT.EXE.
(or hack your way into monster.dat; make a backup first :)
5) Q: I have a suggestion, complaint, or am confused.
A: We LIKE e-mail. AND mail. AND money <g>.
Go ahead and write to us.
6) Q: I get a cryptic error saying something like: Error 67 at
pgm-ctr 1234.
A: BORD messed up somewhere (or you did, or we did). Just run
it again; if that doesn't fix it, you have probably deleted
something important by mistake. Make sure your dropfile is
not passing the wrong COM port or BAUD rate to BORD. Check
your batch file. All else fails - Re-intall BORD.
7) Q: I tried a Bord Crack and it did (or did not) work!
A: Cracks are no good. They are the work of a hacker who has
nothing better to do, because BORD only costs nothing. We
have worked long and hard on it! Registration gets you:
Grunk the Bard Inspiration, no Unregistered Delays etc,
and ETERNAL LIFE (nope! Only Jesus saves)!
8) Q: I ran BORD from DOS and there was some sort of error to do
with my BBS software, which was running at the time.
A: The dropfile (dorinfo1.def, door.sys) in BORD's directory had
a COM port other than 0 specified. This causes BORD to init-
ialize the modem. Just edit your dropfile and make the COMport
say COM0. Might want to change the user's name, too!
VII: CUSTOMIZATON AND CONFIGURABILITY -----------------------
OK, for you Sysops who like to have everything just perfect and
fitting in the overall *theme* of your board, this section is for you.
Otherwise, skip it and check out Registration Information at the end.
BORD uses plain old ASCII text for all file I/O procedures. This
means that it is decipherable and changeable! That is, you can change the
look of many things. This can be great fun, however, A WORD OF CAUTION.
Something you do may insult BORD and it may get even by not working. So be
careful what you change! (especially the number of lines in a file)
PLAYER.DAT contains the names of all the players and their stats.
For example, if you were to examine the 12th number following each player,
you would find that it's the number of forest fights they have left that
day. This is what BORDEDIT's player editor changes when you decide to, say,
change the number of daily forest fights to 45.
MONSTER.DAT contains names and stats of the Dragon's Minions that
you fight in the forest. This includes strength, defence, and pebbles on
hand. This ALSO includes names, weapons, and phrases! Again, BORDEDIT
lets you change their names, and the player who becomes dragon can do this
as well. Anything else must be changed manually.
IANCHAT.DIS, DAILY.DIS, DIRT.DIS, FLOWERS.DAT, and MESSAGES.DAT
contain Hotel Conversation, Daily News, blood-stained dirt, flower arrange-
ments, and private messages, respectively. These can be edited to your
heart's desire, as long as you're careful. You probably shouldn't mess with
the messages, though.
BADWORD.DAT contains naughty words to screen out when they are
typed. Some of the naughtier ones are already contained in the game. If
a bad word is typed, BORD replaces it with spaces. BORD also catches words
that have any character in between, eg. B.A.D.W.O.R.D. would be replaced by
spaces. Instructions for editing are in the file itself.
DAILY.DAT has some headlines for random use in the daily news. Of
course, these can be modified as well. The number at the top of the file
signifies how many headlines are in the file.
ALL.DIS is full of menus and more .dat files. It is somewhat
compressed and is full of pipe (|) symbols, so it is the trickiest of all to
change, even for me <g>. You can't change the letters on the menus, though.
The PIPE SYMBOL (|) is found on the upper-right of your keyboard.
It controls colours, spaces, and a few other internal-game things. Use it
before a number to change colours--eg. |1Hi! would produce the word Hi! in
a dark blue colour; in fact this whole line and on would still be blue. A
pipe followed by an "s" and then a number produces spaces; eg. |s10 would
produce 10 spaces. Colours go from 1 to 15 (from there on comes the more
confusing issue of background colours which I won't go into). Oh yes...
A pipe symbol followed by an x (|x) is used as a separator to change the
colour of a number i.e. |13|x8 makes a purple 8. (|138 will NOT work)
Well, in conclusion, BORD is highly-configurable if you've got the
time and know-how to change it. Good luck!
VIII: REGISTRATION INFORMATION ------------------------------
BORD is pretty much freeware, with some restrictions. That is, you
may use it as long as you wish, without paying. However, lots of work DID
go into BORD, so if you would like to help BORD get better, as well as other
cool TGB Software online programs, then we would appreciate it if you would
register. To register, e-mail or log onto the BBS and send me your info
(SysOp's name). We'll send you a short registration code via Internet E-mail.
This will get rid of Grunk the Bard's annoying "Gone Fishing" sign, as well
as the one-second delay in the Level Master's Location.
Any other special requests will be honoured as well, just be sure
to include lots of extra money <g>.
