The Quick Down-And-Dirty WWIV/Fido Setup
=======================================
This file assumes that you have a front-end program setup and
running.
This file takes you through the steps of setting up your WWIV
BBS for Fidonet. No frills, no froo-froo. You'll want to
read the WWIVTOSS docs after this, because this document does NOT
explain how to setup WWIVToss. That's what the WWIVTOSS docs are
for. The purpose of this is just to give you the *basics* of
preparing your BBS for Fidonet.
Step 1
======
Make a list of the Fidonet Echos that you want to carry. Print
this list out somewhere. Now assign a subtype to each echo. They
can be either numeric or alphanumeric. It doesn't matter.
The subtypes are irrelevent. Choose any naming/numbering scheme
that you want. Just makre sure that each is unique, and 7
characters or less.
This will be the list that you go by to set things up with WWIV
and WWIVToss.
Step 2
======
Go to your WWIV Directory. Go into INIT and choose option 'N',
Networks.
Add a new network. Call it Fidonet. Fill in the directory that
you are going to have your data files in. Set the type to Fidonet.
(* See note below regarding Network Type!)
Now you need a node number. You are going to create a network
with 2 nodes, and 2 nodes only. 1 node will be your BBS, one node
will be "THE REST OF THE WORLD". All messages coming in from
Fidonet will be from that node, and all messages going out from
your BBS will be going to that node. The "REST OF THE WORLD" node
will be referred to as the "fake" node from hereon.
The actual node numbers are irrelevent. You can use @1 and @2,
@8315 and @699, or whatever you want. Choose 2 numbers to use.
Write them down, marking the fake node and the BBS node. Now
put the BBS node into INIT.
Make a note of which network number it is.
Exit INIT.
Step 3
======
Create the directory for the network. Unzip FIDO.ZIP into that
directory. Go to that directory. Load BBSLIST.1 into your
favorite text editor. Replace @699 with the number that you
assigned to your BBS. Don't forget the leading @.
Replace @8315 with the number that you assigned as the "fake"
node. Don't forget the leading @. The other information
is really irrelevent. Change it if you want, leave it alone
if you want. It won't affect the operation of the program.
Save BBSLIST.1.
Now load CONNECT.1 into your editor. Replace all occurances of
699 with the number that you assigned to your BBS.
Replace all occurances of @8315 with the number that you assigned
as the "fake" node.
Save CONNECT.1
Now load up CALLOUT.NET. Replace the @8315 with the number that
you assigned as the "fake" node. Don't forget the leading @.
Save CALLOUT.NET
Step 4
======
Load up WWIV. Go into BOARDEDIT. Start inserting subs. Fill
in the Sub information as you want it. Most of it is irrelevent
to the operation of WWIVTOSS. The only thing that you have to
do for WWIVToss is go under Networks. Add a network. Choose
Fidonet. Put in the subtype that you chose for that echo.
Set the "fake" node as the host. Don't send an auto-request or
email.
Continue doing this for all the echos that you want to add.
Exit WWIV.
Step 5
======
Go to your mailer directory and load up the batch file that runs your
system for you. Find the area where it processes your mail, and
replace any calls to your current mail tosser and WWIV/Fido
translation program with a call to "WWIVTOSS /I /O /P". Minus the
quote marks, of course. Note that WWIVToss will perform it's
own network cleanups if you wish. Go into WSETUP, under
Miscellaneous Options, and turn CLEANUP NETS on. That
eliminates having to figure out where exactly you need to put
calls to the network software in your RUN.BAT file.
The setup of the mailer is going to be up to you, because there
are a variety of mailers and setups, and I can't cover them all.
WWIV Software Services offers a Front Door Installer that works
real well and will give you a good, basic working setup in a
very short period of time.
Some helpful hints. At the beginning of your mailer batch file,
right before it calls the actual mailer program itself, put a
check for an outgoing Fidonet packet in WWIV. If one exists, go
to a section and run WWIVToss. This will ensure that outgoing
messages go out regularly, quickly, and automatically. Here's
the line from mine.
if exist d:\wwiv\fido\s8315.net goto PROCESS_FIDO
And then further down in the batch file:
:PROCESS_FIDO
D:
cd \WWIV
WWIVTOSS /O /P
cd \fd
GOTO START

Important Note: As of this writing (WWIV Ver. 4.24a and Net
Ver 36), there are some bugs in the way the WWIV Software works.
If you want to gate a sub on Fidonet, you MUST either turn OFF
Network Validation, or set the network type in INIT to WWIVNET.
For some reason, the network2 software does NOT set the "Net Val"
flag on incoming Fidonet messages. And if the sub is set for
Network Validation and the network type is Fidonet, messages will
NOT be gated across to non-Fidonet networks. Therefore, if you
want to gate a Fidonet echo to WWIV or vice-versa, you MUST either
set Network Validation to NO or set the network type to WWIVNet.
I am in the process of talking to Wayne and getting this changed.
