With all the legal stuff behind us, let's get on with it ...
HARMFILE was made at the request of many sysops to add at least
SOME amount of file management capability to Harmony BBS.
With the limited release of Harmony BBS v1.0, I decided to wait
until v1.1 was finished. So, here it is -- in all it's glory,
HARMFILE!
=====================================================
When Harmfile is loaded, it defaults to the first file transfer
base defined in HMC. You are immediately brought to a menu
which allows for the following choices :
Change File Base
Edit File Descriptions
Add files to base
Take files offline
Quit
Each one will now be explained in as much detail as reasonably
needed :
=====================================================
Change File
This option simply lets you choose which file base you currently
wish to work with. Harmfile only lets you work with 1 file base
at a time. Choose a base by moving the highlighted bar (with
your up and down cursor keys) to the file base you want to work
with, then press [ENTER].
The current file base will be displayed at the bottom left hand
corner of the screen at the main menu.
=====================================================
Edit File Descriptions
This is the main section of Harmfile. It lets you edit both the
single line, and extended descriptions of all files found in
this base.
The current file will be highlighted. You can move around with
your up and down cursor keys, and you can move forward and
backward entire screens by using your page up and page down
keys.
To edit the description of the current file, simply start typing
it. Harmfile will automatically enter edit mode for that file.
When you are finished, press [ENTER] to accept the change to
that file, or press [ESC] to abort the change.
If you accept the changes, Harmfile will automatically advances
the cursor the next file.
To edit the extended description of a file, make sure that file
is the current highlighted file, and press Alt-E. An extended
description window will pop up and allow you to edit the
extended description of this file.
=====================================================
Add Files to Base
This option allows you to add a batch of files to the current
base at one time. It is the same as the Add Files to HMC of
Harmony BBS v1.0. Simply enter the directory where you new
files are currently located and press [ENTER].
Next, highlight by press [SPACE] on each file you wish to add to
the file base. You can also use the mouse to highlight them.
When you are finished, press [ENTER].
You should NOT try to add files that are already located in the
file bases directory -- it won't work!
You will then be asked if you want to erase the original copies
of all the files you just added. BE VERY CAREFUL!
Now, just go into Edit File Descriptions mode, and change all
the descriptions to each file. See how easy it is?
=====================================================
Take Files Offline
This option allows you to take files offline that you have on
this base. Simply choose this option, and highlight (in the
same way you highlighted the files in Add Files).
You will then be asked if you want to move the selected files to
an "offline" directory. If you wish to save these files, this
is highly suggested.
Finally, you will be asked if you want to update the file
statistics for this base. This should be done immediately,
but if it isn't, you can leave Harmfile and run HMHOUSE -O.
Same thing.
=====================================================
In Closing
That's it. Simple and sweet. I will probably be adding
features to Harmfile as time goes by, but I would really like to
see an ambitous 3rd part programmer create an all out, superior
file management tool.
