I do want to say a BIG THANK YOU to all those who have netmailed their
suggestions and have been using Check PC. What started out as a hard coded
program for me so I can make better use of the .QWK files, has turned out to
be a bit bigger than I had thought and now have it doing a complete
replacement for programs like PCFU and Skymail, instead of only an add-on.
The best way to describe Check PC is to run it, and then look at the log file
(CHKPC.LOG) and the processed file (CHKPC.PRC). The processing of the
incoming data is all automatic!
A requirement of this program is that you have all your incoming data stream
going to one directory. I like this approach and it works here flawlessly.
Your view on this may be different and if so, you may be better off using
PCFU, SkyMail, or another program to check your incoming data.
Check PC looks for it's support files in the directory from which it is ran.
Make sure you place all the support files in the archive into the same
directory. I suggest \CHKPC as the directory to use.

FILE_ID.DIZ Description of Check PC
DESC.SDI Description of Check PC
To setup Check PC, place all the files in this archive into a directory of
your choice. I have mine in D:\CHKPC.
Edit your ACONFIG.SKY file to show all your mail/files going to one directory.
I have included CHKPC.SKY which is the current ACONFIG.SKY file I run on my
system. After you edit ACONFIG.SKY, don't forget to run MAKECFG on it.
Edit the CHKPC.CFG file to show your directory structure of where you want the
files to be moved to after being processed. The CHKPC.CFG file is heavily
documented so you should not have any troubles with it. As a reminder, make
sure that entries of directories really do exist on your system. Check PC
will use whatever entries you place into it's configuration, but it is up to
you to insure that those directories do exist.
Edit the CHKPC.EXC file with your list of files you do not wish to be reported
as missing. This is your exclude list. The format is to use the 'BASE' name
for files you do not want reported. An example would be that if you do not
want the CRS.QWx file checked since you have them directed to \NUL in your
ACONFIG.SKY file, then just place CRS as the base name in the exclude list.
This will allow you to place those bundles/files that you do not want to be
bothered with, but are reported by the UPLD.LST as being sent, to be
disregarded. I have included the CHKPC.EXC file I use here. Edit it to suit
your system. You only need to place the 'BASE' name, not the extension. The
exclude list can have 128 entries which should be more than enough.
You are now ready to run CHKPC.EXE. Just change to the directory where you
have placed the contents of the archive, and type "CHKPC". If Check PC
reports to the screen an error reason, review the message to see if it a minor
error that can be corrected and re-run CHKPC.EXE. If Check PC for some reason
does not run on your system, you will find a CHKPC.DBG file in your directory
and I would appreciate you sending me this file, and your CHKPC.CFG file and I
will help you get Check PC up and running.
Check PC will generate a log file (CHKPC.LOG) in the current directory which
will be the entries of Filename, Extension, Size, Date, CRC-32, Day/Time of
this run, and the action (M for move, D for deleted, and K for Killed) that
was performed. "M" means that we moved the file from the incoming directory
to the directory in your config file, normal. "D" means that we did not move
this file and instead deleted it, a duplicate file. "K" means that this file
was moved to the directory that you chose, but you did not finish processing
the old one and we had to delete it in order to bring in the newer mail/file.
If you get a "K" in your log file, then you should check your batch files to
insure you are taking care of the bundles as they come in. There is also an
"E" which means this file was in your CHKPC.EXC (Exclude list). You can
overide the default directory and place the log(s) where you want them.
Check PC will generate a missed files list (CHKPC.NOT). This file is what was
not received on this pass. If the time of processing is after 06:00am and you
have not ran Check PC yet, then it is the first pass. If you have already ran
Check PC today and then run it again, all new passes will be reported as not
being the first pass. The flag that determines if it is a first pass or not
is the CHKPC.xxx (where xxx is the julian day). If it is the first pass, you
will have your CHKPC.NOT file AND a CHKPC.xxx file generated. All new passes
on this day will only produce a CHKPC.NOT file. This file is your information
on how things are running.
You could also use a text importing utility to send your .NOT and LOG files to
an echo conference to compare to other dish sites, or to your system messages
conference to keep tabs on what your system is doing. If you wish to view the
.NOT or .LOG files, you must do so before the next time you run CHKPC.EXE.
These two files are generated each time and overwriting the old ones.
Check PC will also generate a new processed file (CHKPC.PRC) each time you run
it. The processed file is what is used to determine if the file is new in any
way and if so, to move it. Otherwise if it matches 'exactly' to an existing
entry, then it is deleted. If you wish to edit the CHKPC.PRC file, in case
you wish to receive a file again, then just delete the lines necessary. It is
a self maintaining file and will keep 3 days of history.
If you should find a bug in the way Check PC operates, then please let me know
via the ways mentioned in the docs. I am more than willing to fix anything
that needs it as I use this software daily as you will be doing. :) Most
of the things that have been added to Check PC, have been requested by others
to help their processing go smoother. If you have a suggestion, just let
me know what it is you want added, and I will see if it is within the scope
I have for Check PC, and see if it is something I can incorporate into it.
I wish to thank all those who have encouraged me on the development of
Check PC and especially to those who have asked for features and gave me
the necessary information to actually do it. Without the explanations on
a few things, some of the features would not have been added. I may have a
dish, but I don't utilize all the stuff that comes in. <g>
