Long ago in Verona two famous families the Capulets and the
Montagues carry on a long-standing feud with each other.
Often their quarrels would lead to bitter fighting in the
streets to the anger of the Prince.
Meanwhile Montague's son Romeo is mourning the fact that his
love for the beautiful Rosaline was not returned.
His friends Benvolio and Mercutio try to persuade him to look
elsewhere for love and go with him to a party at Capulet's
house.
At the party Romeo meets Juliet Capulets young daughter and
the pair fall helplessly in love.
14
After declaring their love for each other in the romantic
balcony scene the two young lovers arrange a hasty secret
marriage.
Alas within hours of their wedding tragedy strikes. Mercutio
is killed by Tybalt Juliet's cousin and in revenge Romeo
kills Tybalt. The Prince banishes Romeo from Verona.
Romeo and Juliet seize the chance to spend one night together
not knowing that Capulet is planning to marry Juliet to Count
Paris.
Desperate Juliet seeks help from Romeo's friend and priest
Friar Lawrence.
13
The Friar gives her a drug which will simulate death. She takes
it and her grieving family lay her in the family vault.
However the plan goes wrong and Friar Lawrence's message to
Romeo never reaches him.
Romeo hears that Juliet is dead and buys poison to take his
own life. He rides back to Verona and goes to the tomb.
There he encounters Paris and is forced to kill him. Then
finding Juliet apparently dead he drinks the poison.
The Friar arrives at the tomb too late to save Romeo and tries
to persuade Juliet to leave. However she is grief-stricken and
stabs herself with Romeo's dagger.
8
The Prince and the grieving families gather at the tomb and
piece together the tragic story.
Too late they agree to end the feud between them which has
caused the death of the two 'star-crossed' lovers Romeo and
Juliet.
