  14. Escalus
  15. The Prince of Verona is a figure of great authority someone
  16. to be respected and feared.
  17. He represents order in the play.

  20. Capulet
  21. Lord Capulet wants to appear as a loving and caring father
  22. but his hot temper and thoughtlessness prevent this.
  23. He does seem to care for Juliet and grieves at her death but
  24. in life he expected her to obey his will completely.
  25.  
  26. This domineering side of him is seen in Act III scene v
  27. when he orders her to marry Paris or be evicted from the house.

  29. Lady Capulet
  30. She is even less admirable than her husband. She also expects
  31. Juliet to obey completely and cruelly curses her when she
  32. refuses:
  33. I would the fool were wedded to her grave.    (IIIv)
  34. Even when she believes Juliet is dead her grief seems selfish
  35. and it is hard to find a good word to say about this bitter
  36. revengeful woman.

  38. Montague
  39. Lord Montague is like Capulet quick to anger. However he
  40. seems a warmer and more caring father as his speeches in
  41. Act I scene i show.

  43. Lady Montague
  44. She seems to be a concerned and loving wife and mother when
  45. she makes her only appearance in Act I.
  46. We are told at the end that she has died of grief at the news
  47. of Romeo's banishment.

  49. Benvolio
  50. Benvolio's name means 'to wish well' and this is a good
  51. indication of his character.
  52. He is a sincere and loyal friend to Romeo.
  53.     
  54. Paris
  55. He is a noble and courteous gentleman who is persistent in
  56. his suit for Juliet's hand.

  58. Tybalt
  59. We never see Tybalt except in an angry and aggressive mood.
  60. In Act I scene i he exclaims:
  61. ...peace? I hate the word...
  62. And indeed it seems that Tybalt is always trying to provoke
  63. a fight.

  65. At Capulet's feast he wants to attack Romeo. Later he sends
  66. him a written challenge.
  67.  
  68. Finally in Act III he taunts Romeo again and this leads
  69. directly to his own death.
