  3. George Orwell led a fascinating life.
  4.   
  5. Born in India in 1903 his real name was Eric Blair. Educated
  6. in England he won a scholarship to Eton. He was already
  7. developing a distaste for the English class system.
  8.     
  9. Once he had completed school Orwell returned to the east where
  10. he served for five years as a policeman in Burma (then under
  11. British rule). Returning to England he devoted himself to
  12. writing. To better express the case of the poor for whom he
  13. felt so much sympathy he lived among them in Paris and London
  14. doing menial and ill-paying jobs.

  16. A shop-assistant a tutor a tramp a schoolmaster Orwell
  17. worked all of his many occupations into the books he was now
  18. writing.
  19. He was beginning to achieve some success as several of his
  20. books were published in the early 1930's.

  22. In 1936 he married and took over a small business (a store).
  23. Shortly after this Civil War broke out in Spain and Orwell
  24. felt compelled to go to Spain to fight for the rebel cause.
  25. His experience in Spain gave him many of the ideas he later
  26. incorporated into 'Animal Farm'.

  28. He became committed to the ideals of socialism but also
  29. observed first hand the greed and hunger for power that could
  30. destroy such ideals.
  31. After the war in Spain Orwell's writing became even more
  32. politically motivated.

  34. In 1938 Orwell contracted tuberculosis the disease which would
  35. later kill him.
  36. Declared physically unfit to fight in World War II he did what
  37. he could for the war effort at home.
  38. However he continued his writing and in 1943-44 completed
  39. 'Animal Farm'.

  41. The novel took some time to find a publisher as few were brave
  42. enough to produce a book so sharply critical of Russia now an
  43. ally of Britain.
  44. It was finally published in 1945 and was an immediate success
  45. with the public.

  47. Ill again with tuberculosis Orwell settled on the remote
  48. island of Jura. Here he wrote what is perhaps his most famous
  49. book '1984'.
  50. This novel also reveals the horrors of a state controlled by
  51. all powerful leaders.
  52.     
  53. Orwell died in January 1950.
