News of the rebellion on Animal Farm spreads around the
country and stirs up unrest especially amongst the animals on
the neighbouring farms of Foxwood and Pinchfield.
Jones and his men with the help of the neighbouring farmers
attempt to seize back the farm but a masterly plan devised by
Snowball sees victory for the animals at 'The Battle of the
Cowshed.
Winter sees the desertion of Mollie one of the horses who
rejoins human company.
Times are hard for the animals and things are not helped by
bitter quarrels between the two leaders Snowball and Napoleon.
12
Snowball has rather grand plans for the farm including one for
a windmill to generate electricity.
Napoleon is opposed to the idea and just when Snowball gains
approval from the other animals Napoleon drives him out of the
farm with the assistance of nine fierce dogs that he has
trained.
Squealer justifies Snowball's exile playing down Snowball's
role in the rebellion.
Later the other animals are surprised to learn that Napoleon
had favoured the building of the windmill all along.
13
The animals work hard to accomplish their normal farmwork and
the added task of building the windmill.
No-one works harder than Boxer.
The pigs announce the necessity of engaging in trade with
neighbouring farms to the uneasiness of the animals.
At this time also the pigs move into the farmhouse and
although the others think it may be breaking the commandments
they are shown that it is just their memory at fault.
Fine progress has been made on the windmill but on a night of
terrible storms tragedy occurred.
The windmill is destroyed.!
7
Devastated by the destruction of all their work the animals
are even more shocked when Napoleon detects that it was the
evil Snowball who was responsible for the downfall of the
windmill.
However they are determined to begin anew their ambitious
task and they begin work on rebuilding the windmill.
