- PURPOSE AND FEATURES
- --------------------
- NUTRIENT is a program written in IBM BASICA version 2.00 (PCjr
- requires Cartridge BASIC). It was written for the layman or health
- professional who wants to analyze an individual's food intake (diet)
- for nutrient adequacy. It is intended to accomplish this thru two
- categories of data entry by the program operator (you). First,
- personal data such as name, date of food intake, age, etc.; and
- second, food intake data such as food number and quantity eaten.

- ADEQUACY: regarding adequacy of nutrient intake, this is up to the
- individual. NUTRIENT analyzes one's food intake based on the
- accuracy of the personal data and food intake data entered. In
- addition, the analysis is meant for only healthy individual's in the
- U.S. population since it is based on the Recommended Dietary
- Allowances (RDA) of the Committee on Dietary Allowances of the Food
- and Nutrition Board, National Academy of Sciences. The RDA
- according to this committee are considered "to be adequate to meet
- the known nutritional needs of practically all healthy persons."
- However, there are limitations. The RDA were intended for
- population groups and not individual's. The RDA are estimates which
- exceed the requirements of most individual's. In general, if one
- were to take in less than the recommended amount of certain
- nutrients, his diet would not necessarily be inadequate. However,
- there is evidence that if one's nutrient intake consistently falls
- below the RDA, the risk of nutrient deficiency increases. On the
- other hand, exceeding the RDA by two to three times may be tolerated
- with most nutrients. However, it is not recommended that an
- individual consume excessive amounts of certain nutrients such as
- vitamins A and D, and certain trace minerals.

- Features:
-
- - Economical: NUTRIENT is software written with the end user in
- mind as well as the author. The program is offered at a
- reasonable price, and the user has the opportunity to review,
- and establish the value of the program for his need or interest
- prior to purchase. In turn, the author has the assistance of the
- user in the distribution of the program.
-
- - Individualized Analysis of Food Intake: NUTRIENT will analyze the
- diet of healthy individual's in all stages of the life cycle,
- from infancy through old age (I sometimes feel I'm at both
- extremes).
-
- - Multiple Day Analysis: 3 days of 45 foods each day are permitted
- to be entered.
-
- - 700 Food Database: The main database is a database of food names
- and their nutrient content. This is called FOODFILE. It can be
- customized by entering your own food preferences by using the
- routine called ADD A FOOD. FOODFILE is expandable to a size only
- limited by the disk capacity and speed of your machine. That is,
- large databases may require a hard disk ( but we're talking big )
- and a RAM disk to improve search and sort speed. However, the
- current disk space will allow you to increase FOODFILE to 1100
- foods.

- PURPOSE AND FEATURES (cont'd)

- - 27 Nutrients: There are 27 nutrient values for most foods,
- including some not often evaluated by other programs, such as
- cholesterol and alcohol. Of course alcohol is not considered a
- nutrient or dietary substance essential for humans. However,
- it is included with the nutrient listings for the sake of
- continuity.
-
- - Food Groups: NUTRIENT categorizes foods by food groups to enable
- one to select foods that are close to the one actually eaten,
- in its nutrient content and/or general characteristics.
-
- - Daily Averages: Receive a display and/or printout of the average
- daily nutrient intake for up to three days. This average is then
- compared to the 1980 RDA (expressed as Percent of RDA).
-
- - Printouts: Produced for an individual's Food Intake Analysis,
- including a simple graph, and comments on low and high nutrient
- intakes. You can print out individual food values; or all
- foods in the database by food group; also printout the entire
- Foodfile which will be a necessary reference for each person's
- food intake data entry.

- - Display: Besides printouts, you will be able to display a
- simple graph of an individual's Food Intake Analysis; individual
- food values; foods by food group; and the entire Foodfile.

- - Documentation: What you are now reading, READNUT1.DOC +
- READNUT2.DOC should be 51 pages.

- - Bibliography: A list of references used in the writing of
- NUTRIENT are provided for your referral. Handbook No. 8 and
- its revisions is the suggested reference of choice if you
- want to add foods to the current database.

- - Source Code: The IBM Basic code is provided for those who might
- find it useful as a teaching tool.

- DISK SETUP
- ----------
- Your Working Copy disk will need to be a double-sided/double-density
- diskette, and formatted for 9 sectors, to include the operating
- system DOS 2.0+ (using the /S parameter of the DOS FORMAT command).
- Also include its equivalent version of BASICA.COM.
-
- Only the first 8 files on the Distribution Disk need to be copied
- to your Working Copy Disk. Of course you can also add a batch file
- to load BASICA and NUTRIENT, but that's up to you.
-
- See your version of the IBM DOS manual to carry out the formatting
- of your Working Disk, and copying the Distribution Disk files to it.
-
- Regarding data files, NUTRIENT creates Food Intake Analysis files
- for individual's food intake. It also writes data to, and erases
- data from FOODFILE; therefore, the disk containing these files
- should not be write-protected.
-
- STARTING NUTRIENT
- -----------------
- First, make a Working Disk according to the directions in DISK
- SETUP. Second, put the disk in your default drive (usually drive
- A). Third, once you see on your monitor the DOS A> prompt, type
- BASICA NUTRIENT. That's it. Please enjoy.

- Initial Display Screens

- The first screen you will encounter is a welcome screen. At the
- bottom of this screen is a disk drive prompt:

- Which Disk Drive for
- Personal Data files (A, B, C or ...)?
-
- The Personal Data files are created when you run the Food Intake
- Analysis routine. They contain a description of the individual as
- well as his food intake data. At the above prompt, ENTER a single
- letter to indicate which Disk Drive you want the files to be written.
- It is suggested that you use a disk drive other than the one
- containing the distribution files (main program and data files). If
- the main files are on drive A, then ENTER the letter B or C, etc..
- This suggestion is made only if your default drive does not have the
- capacity to hold several additional files from 7K to 23K each.

- The next screen is a menu of two choices:

- returned to NUTRIENT'S MENU. Otherwise, enter a first name or
- initial, followed by a space, then the last name. NUTRIENT uses the
- NAME to store food intake analysis data; therefore, if analyzing the
- diets of persons with similar names, ie, family members, use FIRST
- NAMES with unique FIRST INITIALS.

- Instead of: JOHN DOE and JAMES DOE
- Use : SENIOR DOE and JUNIOR DOE

- Press ENTER when finished with the NAME. NUTRIENT then displays:

- Enter a two digit month. For example, 01 or 09 or 12. Then enter
- the day as 1 or 2 digits, then the two digit year. Separate each by
- dashes "-", or slashes "/", or by using spaces " ". This date should
- be the date of the individual's food intake. It will later be used
- in combination with their name to locate their last data file. Press
- ENTER when finished. NUTRIENT then displays:

- Enter weight in pounds, either whole pounds or in decimal fractions
- of pounds. For example, 101 or 100.7 or 101.3, and so on. If P for

- Enter the individual's height in inches without shoes, whether an

- As for adults and children, enter the infant's length (measured
- in the suppine position from the crown of the head to the soles of
- the feet, knees unbent, with a reliable measuring board) in inches

- PERSONAL DATA (cont'd)

- FRAME: Small, Medium or Large (S, M or L):

- This entry is usually an estimate, unless you have been measured by
- a reliable source. It is a measure of body frame based on usually
- one of two methods, that is, elbow breadth or wrist circumference.
- Body frame is not a measure of abdominal girth, height or weight.
- If you estimate an individual's body frame without a specific
- measuring device, consider the bone structure of the elbow or wrist.

- Enter the individual's body frame as either small, medium or large
- using S, M or L respectively. Press ENTER.

- NOTE: One final note on personal data entry. A complete personal
- profile is necessary, i.e., NAME, AGE, SEX, HEIGHT, WEIGHT, etc. You
- must enter all personal data or errors may occur.

- Before we continue, a brief comment on the prompts at the bottom of
- the screen is in order.
-

- These two prompts will be seen on the bottom line of many screens.
- F1 represents function key F1. If displayed, you can press it at
- any time and be taken to the HELP routines. F10 represents function
- key F10. When displayed, you can press it at any time and be taken
- to the previous menu, or to the main menu (NUTRIENT'S MENU).
- Further explanation can be found in the respective sections HELP and
- EXIT on page 42.

- CORRECTIONS
-
- With the ENTER key, you can correct data you have entered to the
- program. First, before typing in data on your current line, press
- ENTER. This will backup the cursor to the previous line; keep
- pressing the ENTER key to keep backing up. Second, once at the data
- you wish to correct, simply type over it. However, there is one
- drawback. You must retype each succeeding data entry. If you
- recognized your error just after ENTERing it, you only have to
- backup once and retype data once.

- DAILY ESTIMATED ACTIVITY LEVEL
- ------------------------------

- Now to continue, if the individual's data that has been entered
- represents a nonpregnant adult, then NUTRIENT displays:
-

- ACTIVITY LEVEL

- 1 - Sedentary
- 2 - Lightly active
- 3 - Moderately active
- 4 - Heavily active
-
- Choose a number
-
- This screen represents the daily estimated physical activity of the
- individual. Physical activity is only one of three factors
- contributing to man's energy requirements. The other two are basal
- metabolism, and food metabolism. NUTRIENT uses your personal data
- (age, sex, height and weight) in conjunction with your activity
- level, to estimate your daily energy requirements, measured in
- calories.

- Your job is to select from the 4 choices. Examples of each activity
- category may help:
-
- 1 - Sedentary: seated and standing activities, sewing,
- ironing, truck/auto driving, laboratory work, typing, playing
- musical instruments.
- 2 - Lightly active: walking on level ground at 2.5-3 mph, garage
- work, carpentry, electrical trades, tailoring, restaurant work,
- cannery workers, clothes washing, shopping with light loads,
- golfing, sailing, table tennis, volleybal.
- 3 - Moderately active: walking at 3.5-4 mph, weeding and hoeing,
- plastering, loading and stacking bales, scrubbing floors,
- shopping with a heavy load, bicycling, skiing, tennis,
- dancing.
- 4 - Heavily active: walking with a load uphill, chopping down
- trees, pick and shovel work, climbing, basketball, swimming,
- football, running (short to middle distances). Exceptionally
- heavy activities include: bicycle racing, cross-country skiing,
- marathon racing.

- Keep in mind, no one usually spends 24 hours a day in one activity.
- Therefore, when you select an activity level, consider what activity
- level is participated in for the most hours each day, or estimate
- what the average would be of energy expense for a typical day that
- is comprised of various levels of activity. You be the judge, but
- be realistic. For example, if the individual sleeps 8 hours, sits
- at a desk 8 hours, sits watching TV, eating dinner, and with the
- paper for another 4 hours, works on a garage project for 2 hours,
- uses 1 hour daily in hygienic practices such as bathing and dressing,
- and finishes their 24 hour day with a 1 hour jog, he is not engaged
- in heavy activity but probably sedentary, since he spends most of
- his time in sitting activities.

- This is the food intake data screen; you will be seeing a lot of
- this screen. Let's take a look at its parts. The first line
- displays the number (#) of the day's food intake you are currently
- ENTERing. The next three lines, or heading, display the food intake
- data that will be entered below it, either by the computer or you.
- The question marks represent data to be entered by you. And the
- bottom line displays three prompts.

- FOOD NO. refers to the number of the food found in the FOODFILE
- database. This database can be printed out by going to
- the main menu (NUTRIENT's MENU) and selecting the PRINT
- routine, which is choice 6. Each food is represented by a
- FOOD NO.. You will use that number to access foods through
- all of NUTRIENT's major routines. Now, you will find the
- cursor under FOOD NO.. I have used a ? above to indicate
- that when you see the cursor, it is your turn to ENTER data.
- Key in the food number and press the ENTER key. If the data
- record, that represents the FOOD NO. entered, is empty,
- NUTRIENT will display this message on the same line as the
- FOOD NO.:

- QTY EATEN You will now enter the quantity eaten of the food
- described. Enter only a number. The number should be a
- multiple of the UNITS number. For example, if the UNITS
- displayed are 1 CUP, and 1 cup of the food was eaten, then
- enter the number 1. If 1.25 cups were eaten, then enter
- number 1.25. Easy huh? Be careful, because the UNITS
- displayed for a food may be large. For example, ALMONDS/
- RAW has UNITS of 10 EACH. Therefore, if you ate 8 almonds,
- then you would enter .8 for QTY EATEN; if 10 almonds, then
- 1 for QTY EATEN. If you enter the number 10 for QTY EATEN,
- this represents 100 almonds eaten (10 x 10 EACH = 100). So
- you need to enter multiples or fractions of the UNITS
- number (8/10 EACH = .8). See APPENDIX B - TABLE OF
- EQUIVALENTS for help in converting your QTY EATEN to
- decimal fractions or multiples of the common UNITS.

- To ERASE the entire line and start over, while the cursor
- is under the QTY EATEN heading and no number has yet been
- keyed, press the ENTER key. You can now enter a new FOOD
- NO.. Erasing the entire line may be necessary if you keyed
- in the wrong FOOD NO., or the DESCRIPTION displayed was not
- what you expected. If numeric data has been entered, and
- you don't want to use the food described, simply erase the
- numbers keyed and press ENTER. The FOOD NO., DESCRIPTION,
- and UNITS will be erased, and not calculated into the day's
- totals.

- NOTE: To help in keeping a Food Record, a sample FOOD INTAKE RECORD
- & WORKSHEET is provided in APPENDIX C. This will be handy
- to have at your meals to record your food intake, and then by
- your keyboard while keying-in the Food Intake Screen data.

- F1 HELP This is the HELP prompt; by pressing Function Key F1, at
- anytime, you will be taken to the HELP routines. They are
- intended to be brief but helpful in entering data to a
- particular screen, or choosing from a menu.

- F10 EXIT This is the EXIT prompt; by pressing Function Key F10, at
- anytime, you will be taken to the particular routine's
- prior menu, or to NUTRIENT's MENU.

- FOODFILE. First, let's take a look at the major parts of this
- screen. ADD A FOOD is of course the title of this screen; the next
- line:

- The screen has been designed to try and prevent data entry at places
- other than between the brackets. If you go around those safeguards,
- your on your own.

- Food Description [ ]

- The next line is the Food Description; the cursor will initially be
- found here. Key in the new food's description (within the brackets).
- You are given 20 spaces, and it is suggested that you use a
- method of describing the food, or nomenclature similar to what has
- already been used in the database FOODFILE. Take a look at your
- FOODFILE printout.
-
- Placed first, you will see the food's group or type or category.
- For example: BREAD or BEEF or MILK or DRINK, etc. Of course it is
- not always possible to place a food into a clearly identified or
- distinctive group, as in BAMBOO SHOOTS which you might want
- to place in the vegetable group. But if you preceded the name with:
- VEGETABLE, then VEGETABLE/BAMBOO SHOOTS would take up more than 20
- spaces, thereby limiting other descriptors. Next, you might want to
- key in the food preparation method, i.e., /RAW, /COOKED, /BAKED, etc.
- You will notice that a slash separates the major division's of the
- description. This is not necessary; any separator can be used. It
- does make it easier to read, and might be continued for continuity.

- Perhaps the best method is to study FOODFILE's FOOD DESCRIPTION's
- and try to follow its lead. Using the suggested references of food
- data in the Bibliography (APPENDIX G) can be extremely helpful
- also.
-
- It is possible to key in a Food Description that is already in the
- database. If that happens, this message is displayed:
-

- After a short time, the message will be erased. Then reenter your
- Food Description, but modified to be unique.
-
- ABBREVIATIONS: Because the Food Description is limited to 20
- characters, abbreviations are necessary. In APPENDIX D is a list
- of the abbreviations used in the FOODFILE database.
-
- Once you have keyed-in the Food Description, press the TAB key to
- move the cursor to the next data item.
-
- Food Group [ ] Amount (No.+Unit) [ ] Weight (g) [ ]

- This next line requires three pieces of information: food group,
- food units, and food weight. The units and weight will be found in
- your reference books, or on the food's Nutrition Label.

- The group is up to you to determine. Of course the group in which
- to place a food may be obvious, as with bananas or breads or meats
- or milk. However, some foods defy grouping. For instance, what
- food group do you place alcoholic beverages into? Since they may
- not even be considered a food by some, we have added five groups to
- the traditional Four Food Groups. These nine groups can be found in
- APPENDIX E with a breakdown of each into subgroups.

- Enter a 2-letter Food Group code by following these guidelines:
- The first letter is the first letter of the Food Group itself. For
- instance, use D for the DAIRY/MILK group. The second letter is
- determined by the subgroup. For instance, the DAIRY/MILK group has
- a subgroup called NONFAT. Therefore, you would use N as the second
- letter, if the food falls into the nonfat subgroup. MILK/NONFAT
- would have the Food Group code of DN. Press TAB to continue.

- Amount (No.+Unit) [ ]
-
- The units are entered between the Amount brackets. Examples would
- be: 1 GAL, 1 CUP, 10 EACH, 1 SM, 1 MED, 1 LG, 1 SL, 1 PC, 1 TBSP,
- 1/2 PC, etc.. This is the basic unit that the food's nutrient data
- is recorded, either in FOODFILE, on food labels (1 svg = 1 oz), or
- in reference books of food tables. The food tables in reference
- books usually list the units under the heading: Approximate Measure
- and Weight. Key in a maximum of 6 characters, and press TAB to go
- to the next data item.

- Weight [ ]

- The weight should be recorded in GRAMS. As mentioned above, in the
- previous paragraph, the gram weight is found in food tables under
- the heading: Approximate Measure and Weight, and on food labels next
- to Serving Size. If the weight is in ounces, you convert ounces to
- grams by multiplying by 28.4, since 1 ounce = 28.4 grams. Key-in a
- maximum of 3 digits for the gram weight, and press TAB.

- NUTRIENT DATA
-
- The next major category of data is the food's nutrient data. There
- are 27 consecutive entries from water through alcohol. Each entry
- requires from 3 to 5 digits; this includes the decimal point if
- necessary. Press TAB to move from one nutrient to the next.
- If your source of nutrient data (found on food labels or in food
- tables) lists the nutrient value as 0 (zero), then key in 0. If
- there is no value listed, or a dash (-), or the word trace (tr) is
- listed, then leave blank. In this case, there may be a lack of
- reliable data, although the nutrient is thought to be present in a
- measurable amount; or, the nutrient's value is not measurable.
- Whether nutrient data is keyed-in or not, you can continue to the
- next item by pressing TAB.

- The last line of the ADD A FOOD screen displays the TAB prompt,
- which I'm sure your familiar with by now ... Oh, your not? Well,
- the TAB key is the only way to move from one data item to the next.
- You will remember, at the start of this screen, the cursor was first
- located within the Food Description brackets. If you pressed the
- ENTER key, you received a discourteous beep or bell. This is
- because the ENTER key is reserved, while using the ADD A FOOD and
- CHANGE A FOOD screens as a signal to NUTRIENT. This will be
- explained shortly.

- If you have come to the last data item (Alcohol), and press TAB, the
- following line is displayed near the bottom of the screen:

- The ENTER key, if pressed now, is the signal to NUTRIENT that your
- data entries are OK, that is, they are correctly entered. If you
- press ENTER, your newly ADDed food and its data will be saved in the
- database FOODFILE.

- However, if you have found errors in your entries, then by pressing
- the TAB key now, the cursor will be moved to the end of the Food
- Description. To change data, use the BACKSPACE key. That is the
- only key that will work. It is a safeguard to prevent other data,
- or the screen's format from being changed, and from erroneous data
- being entered to NUTRIENT. TAB will again move the cursor from item
- to item. And once the cursor is past the last entry (Alcohol), the
- ENTER key will signal NUTRIENT that the data is to be saved.

- SOURCE OF FOOD DATA

- A comment about your sources of food data is in order. Part of the
- accuracy of the Food Intake Analysis depends on the reliability of
- the data entered to NUTRIENT's database FOODFILE. It is suggested
- that this data be obtained from two sources:

- 1. FOOD LABELS of major food manufacturers and distributors.
- These labels are found on many food packages, and use the
- heading: NUTRITION INFORMATION PER SERVING:.

- 2. FOOD TABLES of reliable sources. Several of these food tables
- can be found in the reference books listed in APPENDIX G.

- E. The ### is the symbol we have used to represent where you will
- find the FOOD NO. in the screen above. The listings for a

- The phrase `something like this' is used because the personal data
- displayed will change depending on what population group the person
- falls into. For instance, for a child less than 19 years, height
- percentile and weight percentile will be displayed instead of simply
- height and weight. Other changes will be noticed for this group as
- well as other population groups. In essence, the personal data
- displayed will reflect the same categories of data that was entered
- during the Food Intake Analysis routine. The parts of the above
- screen will now be discussed.

- First, the heading, DISPLAY FOOD INTAKE ANALYSIS, which tells you
- that you are in the DISPLAY routine and the FOOD INTAKE ANALYSIS
- option. The next three lines display the individual's Personal Data
- that was first entered in the Food Intake Analysis routine. The
- height entry is worth mentioning since it may be 1 inch greater than
- the height entered in the initial Personal Data. The reason for
- this is because height was requested to be entered without shoes.
- However, NUTRIENT uses a reference for part of the adult population,
- ages 25 to 59, that uses height in shoes with one inch heels to
- determine weight range. Therefore, 72 in. represents height in one
- inch heels, and 157-170 is its respective weight range.

- The next major part is the graph of 17 nutrients. Immediately to
- the right of the nutrient's name is a percent. This percent is the
- average daily intake of that nutrient, calculated as a percentage of

- graphically. The first exponentiation symbol ^ points up to the
- percent RDA value (###%); the next two, point up to the place on the
