On June 14, President Clinton announced he was nominating Federal Appeals Court Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg to replace retiring Justice Byron White on the Supreme Court.
After swift confirmation hearings, Ginsburg, 60, was sworn in Aug. 10, joining Sandra Day O'Connor on the high court.
Despite Ginsburg's record as an advocate for women's rights, some abortion rights groups expressed concern about her nomination. However, the president praised Ginsburg as a "consensus" maker.
