On Jan. 15, David Letterman announced he was leaving his late night slot at NBC and moving to an earlier time at CBS.
The deal was reportedly worth $14 million a year.
His move set off a series of skirmishes for the late night television audience. On Aug. 31, Letterman made his first appearance opposite NBC's "Tonight Show" with Jay Leno.
Chevy Chase appeared in a short-lived night time show in September on the Fox network, and an unknown comedy writer, Conan O'Brien, was picked to replace Letterman at NBC.
