Shortly after noon Feb. 26, a massive bomb went off in a public garage beneath the World Trade Center in New York. Six people were killed; more than 1,000 were injured.
It was the deadliest bombing in the United States in 20 years, and brought home to Americans that the United States is not immune to terrorist violence.
The first of six suspects was arrested March 4, when he tried to claim a $400 deposit on a yellow rental van believed to have carried the bomb.
The man was identified as a Muslim fundamentalist, Mohammed Salameh.
Radical Muslim cleric Omar Abdul Rahman was indicted Aug. 25 on charges of leading a conspiracy to bomb the World Trade Center and a larger, foiled plot to bomb the United Nations and other New York landmarks. Fourteen others were also charged in the second plot.
At year's end, a trial was underway for suspects in the Trade Center bombing.
