On Oct. 4, troops loyal to Boris Yeltsin attacked the Russian Parliament building and crushed a revolt against the government. Estimates were that at least 200 people died. The attack followed an attempt Oct. 3 by rioters to seize the mayor's office and the main broadcasting center.
Yeltsin had disbanded the parliament 12 days earlier. Parliament speaker Ruslan Khasbulatov and Vice President Alexandr Rutskoi, considered the principal leaders of the revolt, were arrested.
