Zounds!
By Don Lloyd
Zounds! is a Workbench-based sound player for users of the 2.0 OS. I
haven't tried it under 1.3, but I imagine it'd load and do absolutely
nothing since Zounds! uses 2.0's AppEvents.
To use Zounds, just double-click its icon or run it from the CLI to get
started. It will open an icon-like (hereafter referred to as its icon)
window on your workbench screen. (There will be an unsightly drag bar on
top of this... just click on something else on your WB to make this disappear;
when you want to move the Zounds! icon, just click on it first to make the
drag bar reappear). Use your WB to find some IFF 8SVX sounds somewhere. When
you want to listen to one, just drag its icon and drop it on top of the
Zounds! icon. You can even play multiple sounds by shift-clicking a group
of sounds and dragging them to the Zounds! icon, but they're likely to come
out sounding a bit jumbled.
To exit Zounds!, just click on its icon and select Quit from its menu.
There are two versions of Zounds! included. The first is the normal
standalone version. The second, called Zounds!.cd, is for owners of CanDo
v1.5 or later who have the CanDo.library in their libs: directory.
Future plans for Zounds!:
- Rewrite in C as soon when documentation for 2.0-specific features
becomes available for non-developers. Since CanDo.library is not
redistributable, it has to be compiled as a standalone application by
binding it with CanDo's DeckRunner... which adds over 100K to the size of
the executable (Zounds! is ~124K, while Zounds!.cd is just under 2K!).
- Add a means of setting the volume.
- Provide better support for multi-sound playing.
Zounds! is shareware. Being a Poor College Student (tm), I'll take
money any way I can get it :-). If you like Zounds! and use it often,
please send me $5 (if you _really_ like it you could send more, I suppose
:-). This will entitle you to free upgrades to future versions (no
upgrades are promised, but time and documentation permitting, I'll give it
a try).
Zounds! may be redistributed freely as long as the files in this
archive all remain present and unmodified, and as long as the above
shareware notice is heeded.
