Electric Fields of Point Charges allows the student to set up an arbitrary arrangement of point charges in a plane and examine their electric field pattern. One may place up to 10 fixed charges on the screen and then look at the resultant electric field using any one of three different views: vectors, directional arrows or field lines. Vectors show both the magnitude and direction of the electric field at each point clicked with the mouse; directional arrows show the direction only using a fixed length arrow; field lines display continuous lines originating at the selected point and running parallel to the field from positive to negative. The program has two parts; the simulation, which is suitable for lecture demonstrations comprises the first section; a student exercise comprises the second. In the exercise, the student selects a number of charges (from 1 to 4, or an unknown number, n) and then the program generates a random arrangement consisting of that many charges, without displaying them on the screen. The student must use the various views of the electric field to infer the location and magnitudes of each of the charges. Feedback is available at any time, indicating of the correctness and completeness of the student's current inferences. When ready, students may expose the charges and compare their predictions with the actual arangement. This program has been used in the third semester introductory physics course for science and engineering students at Carnegie Mellon.
