Welcome to the \IExploring the Internet\i tutorial. This tutorial points out some of the main features of the CD and how to use them.
\IExploring the Internet\i is a multimedia learning package. It has been designed to make learning easier and more interesting. In addition to hundreds of color pictures, this CD uses sound and video clips to demonstrate how to perform various tasks.
Using a multimedia approach, this CD presents training material and lets you apply what you learn in interactive steps. This gives you an opportunity to become familiar with the subject matter.

This CD is easy to operate. At the top of the screen is the \C0000FFtoolbar\c. This is always displayed, and provides access to all CD controls.
The main page-control buttons are in the middle of the toolbar: the \IFirst Page\i button takes you to the first page of the current section, the \IBack One Page\i button takes you back one page, the \INext Page\i button takes you to the next page, and the \ILast Page\i button takes you to the end of the current section.
You can move to the next page using the \INext Page\i button on the toolbar, or you can click on the green underlined text that appears at the bottom of each text box, as you did on the previous page.
To make using the toolbar easier, we have included descriptive captions for the buttons. To display a button name, move the mouse pointer over the button.

The CD is organized as a multimedia book, and as such, it is made up of chapters, sections and pages.
Near the top of the screen, below the toolbar, is the \C0000FFstatus bar\c. This displays the current chapter and section name.
The title bar of this text box displays the current page number and the total number of pages in this section. The title bar also contains a minimize button and a close button which let you minimize and close the text box.
Before we move on, take a look at the text box you are reading fromùit appears in a movable, resizable window.
You can move or resize this text box at any time. To move the text box, drag it by its title bar. To resize the text box, place your mouse pointer over the frame of the box. When the mouse pointer changes to a double-headed arrow, drag the text box to the desired size.
This text box also displays a scroll bar down its right-hand side if there is more text to be viewed in the window.

To move to a new section in this CD, click on the \IContents\i button on the toolbar. The Contents screen gives you access to the five chapters in the CD.
On the following pages we will show you how to use the Contents screen and other features of this CD.

This illustration shows the Contents screen that appears whenever you click on the \IContents\i button on the toolbar.
You can move to this screen at any time to select different chapters or sections within the CD.
To view the sections within a chapter, click on the island representing that chapter.
When you do this, a pop-up menu appears listing the sections available.
To move to a section, click on the section name on the pop-up menu.
If you do not want to open any sections within that chapter, click on the \IHide Menu\i command to remove the pop-up menu.
From the Contents screen, you can also access this tutorial, a preview of the product, and a list of credits. To do this, click on the background of the Contents screen and select an option from the pop-up menu.

Once you become familiar with the function of the \IBack One Page,\i \INext Page,\i and \IContents\i buttons, you can move around this CD with ease.
All dialog boxes include a \IHelp\i button. Click on this button for information about how to use the dialog box you are viewing.
Let's take a look at some of the features of this CD.

As you work through this CD, you will find pages where the text box obscures the picture. There are three ways you can hide the text box and display the picture.
The first way is to minimize the text box.
To do this, click on the minimize button. The minimize button is located at the right end of the text box title bar.
When the text box is minimized, the minimize button becomes the restore button.
Click on the restore button when you want to restore the text box.
\BNote:\b \IWhen you come to a page where the picture is obscured, you will see text reminding you that you can minimize the text box to view the entire picture.\i

The second way to view the entire picture behind a text box is to click on the \IHide Text\i button on the toolbar.
When you click on the \IHide Text\i button, the text box is removed from the screen.
When the text box is hidden, the \IHide Text\i button changes to the \IShow Text\i button.
To re-display the text box, click on the \IShow Text\i button.

The third way to view a picture is at full screen size.
This means that all components of the interface other than the picture are removed from the screen.
To view a picture at full screen size, double-click on the picture.
To return the display of the picture to normal, press the Esc key or click on the picture.

As you work through the CD you will find cross-references to related topics. These cross-references, called "jumps," are indicated by a color and a solid underline.
When you click on a jump, the program "jumps" to the related topic.
To return to the page that contains the cross-reference, click on the \IJump Back\i button on the title bar of the text box.

When technical terms or concepts are introduced, they are often displayed as "popups."
A popup is a word that opens a popup window when you click on it. The popup window contains an explanation or description of the word. Popups are indicated by a color and a broken underline.
To remove the popup window, click elsewhere on the screen.

You can click on the \ISettings\i button to set basic user options, including the size, font, and color of the text you are reading right now.

You can click on the \ISearch\i button to search for a specific word, page, video, user highlight, or user note.

You can click on the \IPrint\i button on the toolbar to print a single page, a whole section, or a range of pages.

You can add your own notes to any page by clicking on the \IAdd Note\i button. These notes are automatically saved to your hard disk.
The Note window appears in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen, and you can click in this window to enter your notes. When you click on the Note window's close button, the note becomes a paper clip icon at the bottom left of the screen.
Click on this icon to re-open the note.

You can mark pages in the CD with 'bookmarks' so that they are easy to find later.
To do this, click on the \IPage Options Menu\i button and select the \ICreate Bookmark\i command from the drop-down menu.
The \BCreate Bookmark\b dialog box opens. In the \ICreate Bookmark\i text box, type a name for the bookmark and click on the \IOK\i button.

After you create bookmarks, it is easy to move to them.
Click on the \IPage Options Menu\i button and select the \IGo To Bookmark\i command from the drop-down menu.
For more details about creating and locating bookmarks, click on the \IHelp\i button in the \BCreate Bookmark\b or \BGo To Bookmark\b dialog box.

To move directly to a specific page in the current section, click on the \IPage Options Menu\i button and select the \IGo To Page\i command from the drop-down menu.
In the \BGo To Page\b dialog box, you can either type in the number of the page or select the page name from the list box and click on the \IGo To Selection\i button.

To move back to pages that you have already looked at in the current session, click on the \IPage Options Menu\i button and select the page name from the bottom of the drop-down menu.
To move back to the most recent page you looked at, click on the \IPage Options Menu\i button and select the \IGo Back to Previous Page\i command from the drop-down menu.

The \IHighlighter Pen\i command is a unique feature that lets you highlight text in this CD in the same way you would highlight text in a book.
To highlight text, click on the \IInteraction Menu\i button and select the \IHighlighter Pen\i command from the drop-down menu.

In the \BHighligter Pen\b dialog box, use the \ISelect Text to Highlight\i scroll box to select the text you want to highlight.
Then select the color you want your highlight to be from the \IHighlight Color\i drop-down list box.
The \IColor Description\i text box can be used to define different meanings for different highlight colors.
For more information about highlighting text, click on the \IHelp\i button in the \BHighlighter Pen\b dialog box.

If you want to, you can run the pages as a slide show, that is, have the pages turned automatically for you.
To do this, move to the page you want the slide show to start at. Click on the \IInteraction Menu\i button and select the \IRun as Slide Show\i command from the drop-down menu.
When you select the \IRun as Slide Show\i command, each page is displayed for ten seconds before moving to the next page.
If there is sound or video on a page, the page displays until that sound or video is complete.
To stop the slide show at any time, press the Esc key.

You can create a 'library' of your favorite or required pages, and save a list of these pages as a file using the \ILibrary\i command from the \BInteraction\b menu.
You can use this library immediately, or open it from disk at a later stage. You can view or print pages in your library, or run the pages in your library as a slide show.
If you want more details about creating a library, click on the \IHelp\i button in the \BLibrary\b dialog box.

To control the sound on a page, use the indicated button.
When there is a sound associated with a page, the button's tooltip will read \IPlay Sound\i, unless the sound is already playing, in which case it will read \IPause Sound\i.
Click on this button to start and stop the sound.
The status bar displays a moving slide bar to indicate how much sound has played and how much sound is left to play.
To fast forward or rewind the sound, drag the slide bar to a new position in the status bar and release the mouse button to play the sound.

To control the video on a page use the indicated button.
When there is a video associated with a page, the button's tooltip will read \IPlay Video\i, unless the video is already playing, in which case it will read \IPause Video\i.
Click on this button to start and stop the video.
The status bar displays a moving slide bar to indicate how much video has played and how much video is left to play.
To fast forward or rewind the video, drag the slide bar to a new position in the status bar and release the mouse button to play the video.
When you have finished watching a video, click on the \INext Page\i button on the toolbar to move on.

To aid your learning experience, this CD provides you with interactive steps.
Wherever appropriate we attempt to let you perform the action that is being explained.
Whenever you come to a text box that has the instructions "\B\C0000FFPlease do this now\c\b," you are required to complete the necessary action.
The advantage of these interactive steps is that they let you familiarize yourself with the program within a controlled environment.

If you come to an interactive step where the text box is obscuring part of the object, you will see text reminding you to minimize the text box.

If you do not complete an interactive step correctly, this message box appears.
If you see this message box, click on the \IOK\i button to acknowledge the error.
Re-read the instruction text carefully before attempting the action again.
By default, the interactive operation mode is on. This means that whenever you come to an interactive step, you are not able to move on until you complete the action correctly.
If you want to work through this CD without having to perform the interactive steps, click on the \IInteraction Menu\i button on the toolbar and de-select the \IInteractive Operation\i command.
